What's up fam?

Just want some answers if it safe to use 5-40w oil on my Type R? I don't track my car I just daily drive it however I do have my moments driving aggressively I was told using 0-20w oil has no protection in the engine is that true?

No, it's not. 0w-20 is great for cold weather as it's able to get flowing quickly on a cold start, where an engine is much more susceptible to wear. During the hot summer (not sure how warm it gets up there for you)you can run something thicker though 5-40 may be too much. I think owners down south or out west have used 5w-30, but I'm not 100% sure what the thicker option is. I know it can be found through the search function.

40 weight? In Canadian cold weather? In a 10th gen Civic turbo?

Yes it’s ok. Run a 0W40 if you think 5 is too much for the cold weather.

Viscosity and film strength don't necessarily correlate. 0w20 will flow better on startup, and will cool engine components better. A thicker oil will maintain oil pressure better when the oil gets hotter than "normal" operating temperature, such as extended WOT operation, racing etc.
FWIW, I've done used oil analysis on amsoil SS 0w20, 0w30 and 5w30 in the 1.5t. All 3 gave great wear numbers.

I'm running amsoil ss 0w-20 and am digging it.

I would use the same or their 5w30 if it were readily available and not as expensive.

I run mobil 1 0w40 fs European formula. I think my wrx should run same idemitsu 0w20 or 30 by oem specs. Not concerned about extra protection at higher temps on a highly tuned engine.

So in my case I'm fine using 0-20w weight all season because I don't track my R I just daily drive it.
