Good question. With the 2.0 Type R motor fuel dilution should not be as prevalent as with the 1.5. With the small 1.5 starting at 0w20 and getting fuel in it causes the viscosity to drop. This won't be a major problem in the 2.0 but it's still a possibility. Some amazing oils in the 0w40 variety feature the best total qualities from their manufacturers. Motul XMAx and LiquiMoly for example. They have the types of molecules that adhere to metals and protect with more strength than any 0w20. A good 5w30 or 0w30 is a good zone to be in. Tests have proven Amsoil's 0w30 Signature Series to protect very well, 4x-5x times better than some other common oils. So I like this oil for factory Hondas and LiquiMoly 0w40 Synthoil too. Right now I'm trying LiquiMoly 0w30 Synthoil Plus which flows very well cold but is not as quiet running as the heavier 0w40 stuff.

I would go something ending in 30 in the winter and ending in 40 in the summer because the major differences are in the cold viscosities, affecting cold start-up. You want protection but don't want to overburden the oil pump. MAP's 500hp 1.5 suffered bent rod and cracked oil pump rotors so I don't know how heavy they went with their oil but Honda designed these engines for light oil and remember that lighter oils will flow fast and cool well.

What happens if you use 0W-20 on a Hot track day? Engine catches fire? water-Thin synthetic oil evaporates and engine seizes? from the owner manual and on the oil cap it clearly shows 0W-20. I have done plenty of very hard track days in extremely hot CA weather on my 911 using a recommended oil that dealership service shop uses. Never ever had any issues. Honda is a reliable vehicle what us going to happen? has anyone ever experienced issues with factory recommended oil on track?

Is this about a Civic or a 911? Advertised weights of oil are pretty non-descript. If you describe in more details we can understand you. What brand and advertised weight of oil? What PSI boost are you running, using what tuner software, how much knock control, what intercooler, how many miles in car etc etc ? What track event? What oil change intervals or methods? (these are variables)

We were just talking about this in a different thread. Some people seem to move to 5w30 or something similar, but I dont think theres anything wrong with staying on 0w20, especially if you are just daily driving it with some hard pulls here and there.

If you are going to be tracking it, move to a higher quality 0w20 like Motul.

StigJDM had 22 hard track days on his R on 0w20, I think it should be fine.

My feeling is, Honda designed this engine to run on 0-20w. Use any other weight at your own risk, long term.

I’m not sure that is true. Oil weight is tied directly to efficiency. With auto start/stop, direct injection and even Amsoil saying they are working on 0w-8 oil, all arrows point to efficiency and not durability and longevity. However, it is assuring to see oil analysis results that look good with 0w-20 oil.

It’s rated for other oils too in Japan and South Africa. 0w20 is only recommended because it helps them achieve fuel economy numbers for the EPA and it even says that in the manual. Hell, they even give you a handy chart for choosing your oil weight.

Manual from South Africa (cause most of us cant read Japanese):

This is interesting. I might switch to 5W30 next change. I'm using Castrol 0w20 Magnatec right now. I use Castrol because that is what the shop I work at uses and its available and cheap at my employee price. I also think Castrol is good oil.
