My maintenance minder is telling me to change my oil and filter, but my Si has less than 3500 miles. This seems inconsistent with when some other Si owners have been prompted by their car to do the first oil/filter change. Any ideas?

I got the car almost six months ago. End of November. Is the oil/filter change schedule based on mileage or time? I don't want to change the factory "break-in" oil prematurely...

My understanding is that it takes mileage, time, and driving style all into consideration. There may be more to it.

Lots of short drives? Stop and go?

i would think accel and deceleration would set the rings best, im not sure if constant highway driving would be good way to break a engine in.

If that's true about acceleration/deceleration being good for setting the piston rings, then my engine is in great shape!

My driving is mostly city driving, stop and go, with occasional freeway use. Mostly short (under 1 hour) drives. I hope this early oil-change reminder is not an indication that I'm being too hard on my car!

City stop and go and shorter drives will speed up the oil change interval. You're not going to get the same 7,500+ miles as the guy driving mostly long highway drives.

Yeah, that's likely what's happening. It's great that cars these days can figure out when their oil needs changing.

Wow, mine didn't hit 15% and the Maintenance Minder until almost 9000 miles. I bought the car at the end of October 2017 and my first oil change was 5/1/18.

My 2014 Accord made it to 5,000 miles when we lived in Hawaii. That was solely city driving, with heavy stop and go traffic. My 2017 Si is still has not had it's first oil change (I now live in Pennsylvania) and I am approaching one year and 10,000 miles. The MM is saying its still at 30% life. I will probably replace at the one year anniversary, but I am in no rush. Just follow the MM, it will know when to replace the oil.

If it says to change them, then change them lol. Problem solved. No it’s not bad to change oil that early.

Just have to say, it's so good to hear you say this. More than just a few people have changed their first engine oil before the MM said so, because they felt it "wasn't needed" or are still under the impression that oil needs to be changed at 3,000 miles (that's nothing more than marketing from oil companies trying to sell more oil). Modern cars will tell you when the oil needs to be changed. And if it doesn't, simply consult the handy guide in the glove box to find out the manufacturer's recommended frequency.

Sorry, a bit of a pet peeve of mine.

well im sure the cars not actully analizing the oil. its probably just time and milage based with brake and accelerator inputs to some equasion computed for the computer to tell you its time to change the oil.

if i threw a cup of sand in with the oil i dont think the car would be any wiser to let you know it needed to be changed sooner.

anyone know what sensors the computers getting readings from to make this oil MM come on?
