The new phones I'm seeing have Type C USB connectors, rather than the USB Micro of my current phone.

Obviously I'd need a new cable. But there's a fussiness with Android Auto and cables -- I finally got it working on the 8th cable I tried.

Are there issues with Android Auto and Type C phone connections?

Thanks.

I had issues with my Samsung Galaxy S8. Any aftermarket cable I used (standard USB on one end for the head unit, USB C for the phone) would work and stop working intermittently. I started using the cable that came with my phone, and have never had an issue. Using the same cable with my Galaxy S20 today.

I've used Monoprice USB-C cables with several generations of Pixels and they've all worked fine.

At first I was using a Type C adapter piece, and it worked fine for a long while and then suddenly stopped working. Kept saying the phone was not connected. Tried some of the other adapters I have around the house and still wouldn't work. So I put the cable that came with my phone in the car, and works like a charm.

Thanks for the feedback.

It's curious that the USB Micro cable that finally worked for me was the cheapest one. I had tried seven others that were supposedly better quality and none worked consistently. The cheap one has been fine for months.

I tend to buy low-end mid-range phones (or alternatively high-end low-range phones -- if either of those makes any sense). Anyway the last two phones I got didn't come with cables. I expect to scale up a bit so maybe the next one will.

I had issues with the built in USB extender. I had better luck using the direct cable.
