we have confirmation that it was a manufacturing process flaw - causing all the faux cf replacement exterior trim pieces (lip, side skirts, and rear diffuser) to become "gloss" and not as textured as the original ones that came with the 2017 and 2018 cars. unfortunately, 2019 cars are coming with these less textured parts causing people to think honda changed or updated the parts. that's not true - 2019s are simply coming with the "wrongly" produce faux cf trims. some may like that and no big deal. it's when you need to replace damaged trim pieces or for any reason you'll run into mismatching.

there was a flaw in the mfg process which we've confirmed and documented in this fb post. 15,000 units were produced incorrectly and were not caught in time so are now in the field (dealer parts inventory) for replacements.

top pic: textured
bottom pic: gloss/wrong process

summary: if you order a replacement faux cf trim piece, you likely will receive the too glossy one that will not match your oem 2017 or 2018 trim piece. part numbers are exactly the same.

your options:
  1. return and reorder repetitively hoping to get a matching textured one, or
  2. live with the non matching replacement piece, or
  3. wait until the next production run of replacement pieces once honda has hit a minimum par level of replacement trim pieces inventory and produce them the right way

Wow, what a crazy error haha. Feel sorry for 2019 owners :(

Perhaps the second hand value stays stronger for the rest of us :confused1:

I had to settle and keep it mismatched unfortunately because it looks less crappy than having a clearly damaged front end

I bought a lip spoiler a few months ago and never replaced the scratched one I have - time to take a peek to see if it's glossy. Never even unwrapped it.

hmm... my 2019 looks more like the top pic though...
Update with pics of my own '19 CTR. I should probably find the build date on this so I can maybe help identify the start of defected manufacturing... Can anyone provide the thread with the explainer for build numbers please?

yes, it seems random for early 2019 to have the more textured ones. many 2019 are reporting the more glossy ones and for those who ordered replacement parts.

The replacement spoiler I bought a few months ago is glossy black, not matte. Ugh.

Is it really that noticeable on the car? Worth making a stink? Maybe wrap the lip with CF vinyl?

I believe if your surface is smoother now, it'd be easier to vinyl wrap. Shops I asked have said they don't want to do it on mine because of the type of surface. Perhaps the texture plays a role there too.

correct, either version is not ideal for ppf with xpel or other ppf films nor for vinyl wrap. if someone says they can do it, walk away.

Oh man, this sucks. I love the carbon fiber pattern on the '17 and '18 - my '19 is being built this month, and it sucks that it will likely have this flaw.

How difficult would it be to swap the CF trim pieces for corrected OEM ones once they have a proper replacement batch manufactured?

Very easy. Problem is most of the bad parts are out in field as replacement. You may luck out and comes like this. It’s pretty random on the new 2019.

Could you wax these or put paint sealant on them? I recently got a bunch of car detail products and was wondering how I am supposed to tackle this faux trim.

yes, absolutely!

i did gtechniq crystal lacquer ceramic coating on mine as you can see why they shine.
