i have proof that 8 gauge wire is fine for rear trunk mounted amp. here's the real time readout on the distribution block showing constant 14.5v with car idling. there is no voltage drop using 8 gauge wire from battery to the trunk.

in case anyone feels need to use 4 gauge wire which is a pain to feed through the firewall/hole in fender near fuse box. 8 gauge is fine.

@06S2k07Si here you go....received the spl meter i ordered off amazon for $55. details below were what posted on our fb group, but for your pleasure, my jl audio system is putting out 113.4 db...above human ear threshold where pain starts which is 110 db.

113.4 db isn't bad for an 8" sub ;-)

PRODUCT REVIEW/TIP - Digital Sound Meter

-----
This is somewhat related to the CTR but wanted to share since we just received a tool to try out for some of the work we do on the CTR. It's the VLike VL6708 digital SPL meter, available on Amazon for $55. There are other good ones for about $20-$25 but less functions so check them out as you need.

It has great features including dual mode A and C weighting (A for what natural human ears pick up and C for actual sound frequencies and levels humans cannot pick up), max/peak level hold, adjustable range (30-130 db), backlighting, and auto off. The only thing missing is a slot at the bottom for a standard tripod or back flip out stand of some sort.

It's simple to use and highly accurate to within +/- 0.1 db. We wanted to do some sampling of our audio system upgrade to see what it's really putting out in term of SPL...along with the GRP exhaust and some engine levels.

Here are the results just for fun!

1) Audio system upgrade with JL Audio C2 speakers in 10 locations and W3V3 8" sub and XD600/1v2 amp...113.4 db max

2) @GrahamRahalPerformance turboback boost controlled valved exhaust with car parked, revs, and valve not opened (set at 12 psi to open)...95.2 db

3) @Mishimoto intake system revs with whooshes...120.1 db

For reference purposes, here are some decibel levels from Purdue University R&D: https://www.chem.purdue.edu/…/Training/PPETrain/dblevels.htm

110 db is human ear's maximum pain threshold. Above 110 db increases chances of rupturing your eardrum. So if you're curious how loud your exhaust is or that annoying neighbor with the "fart can" exhaust, pick up one of these for fun...LOL!

Project is now fully completed with full cutout for the folding lid and centered partial cutout for trunk tray. Finished with floating “R” emblem on top of plexiglas and a layer of Gtechniq ceramic coating on plexiglas. The trunk tray cutout is a removable cover (bottom lined with black felt) to protect the plexiglas since I use my tray a lot for Costco runs.

100% full use of trunk - ZERO trunk space lost. Challenge conquered - how to maximize stock foam tray, add tiny weight (6 lbs for amp), and zero space taken away from trunk...while increasing bass significantly (113.4 dB as measured with SPL meter).

No more audio changes for a while...I tell myself

So 113.4 dB is damn good for an 8” sub, right? Thing hits harder than you’d think. Very pleased.
Yes I think for a tiny enclosure an an 8 that's not too bad! I certainly appreciate your efforts!

CTR...did you put any felt or foam etc on the underside of the OEM hatch liner where you cut out the piece above the plexiglass? ...as to not scratch it? ...just curious.

I have been using this ensolite adhesive backed foam for many years and it's adhesive is fantastic. If one were to line not only the underside of that section you cut out but the remainder of the entire protector it shouldn't move around either (not to mention that the heights of both will be the same too). ...yes I realize that that protector is a snug fit but... just one idea...

the way it sits works out really well. the plexi is sunken and is 1/8" lower than top side of folding floor lid with full cutout. the top of the stainless steel finishing caps of the standoffs are actually 1/8" higher than the plexi so are flushed with top side of folding floor lid.

the trunk liner has partial centered cutout for a simple reason - i'm ocd and can't stand an off-center cutout. therefore the bottom of the trunk liner covering the plexi sits on top of the finishing caps. the removable/reusable trunk liner cutout as a "cap" sits on top of the 4 finishing caps in that partial yet centered cutout.

everything is flushed with each other per layer. therefore, under the tray liner and only the area right above the plexi is covered with black velvet sticky back material which is soft and "absorbs or cushions" any particles or sand that could scratch the plex when covered.
