I agree with Sam3. That's what I did late last year at Road America. Just went to their website found the times I wanted, registered, and when I got there it was very well organized and easy to follow. The novice group had two sessions of classroom, with a trip to the autocross track they have, then two lead follow sessions, and finally one session of open track. The best way to start is to go the websites of the tracks you're interested in and check their calendars. In your case:
https://oregonraceway.com/scheduling-calendar-2/
https://portlandraceway.com/?/events/calendar
And then click on the days you're interested in. It will take you either to the track day organizer's website or motorsportreg's website to register directly. Either way, you can Google the organizers and read reviews about them. And then you register with them and choose the beginner group.
This is the safest, most fun way for a novice to start. The track operates with a point by system to pass, as most do. I had a blast and before the end of the year I was with the intermediate group.
