Thanks for getting back on topic . Still waiting on the 2018 Golf R release information, and to check one out when it hits the show rooms. Yeah I hear the GTI is a great car as well, optioned out with the autobahn edition it's only a few thousand cheaper then a Golf R.OP - Getting back on topic...I'd say go test drive a few cars and see which you like best. If you can't get a hold of a Golf R, do the next best thing and drive a GTI. Obviously there will be differences, but you can get a good enough taste to see what you like. Same goes for any other model.
I also wouldn't worry too much about reliability or horror stories. EVERY car has them. FWIW, out of all the cars I've owned, my Honda's had more problems then my Fords - which have had zero. Go figure. Look on the forums for reliability (or lack of) trends and put your mind at ease.
Think about what you want the car to do for you. Look at reviews and forums, too. However, the bottom line is - reviews can only help you so much...get your butt in a seat and drive some!
I think it looks pretty good to anyone who has had a timing belt slip on an Interference engineWho the hell would want to work on that. I can't imagine opening that thing up.
