Not sure if this is the same with everyone else's, but the sliding cupholder in my hatchback (the cupholder between the driver and front passenger that can hold two "cups") has different size openings. Is everyone else's like that?

Yes, it's designed like that.

Here's the image from Honda's website (taken from the Civic gallery):

I've not tried it - can you flip them the other way around (so front is bigger, rear is smaller)?

Ah ok. Wish they made them the same size.

I haven't tried that. Why not slide the armrest back, and put the larger drink in the back cup holder?

Flipping it around won't help when you need both to be the same size.

I glad they are different sizes. The larger opening allows for the larger soda bottles and cups while the smaller takes the "usual" size bottles. It was always a pain when I had those larger bottles in my old car. They would often tip over.
And yes, you can flip the tray around. When I got my car the smaller opening was forward. Now I have the larger opening forward.

The iPhone 7 Plus fits nicely in the larger opening along with a dock-like cable I have, but the tumbler I use for coffee every morning also only fits in the larger opening.

You can flip it around. I did and it's much better this way IMO because I had a regular water bottle in the smaller one and I could still slide the armrest all the way forward without hitting it. Plus I still had my big cup holder open to hold my phone or large drink

Yikes, go back to the dealer. You're supposed to have the two removable cupholder tray as shown in the 2nd post.

Yeah someone stole your cup holder

I've had mine over a year and didn't even notice there were 2 sizes
