Hondata has an option to up the 124 mph speed limiter speed, and I was wondering what the implications of doing this are?

Does increasing the limit have the potential of damaging the engine? Or is it just a safety thing?

Generally it is safety related and based on whatever the OEM tire speed rating is based on. Of course 124 is nearly 1.5-2x the posted speed limit anywhere in the USA... so, there is that.

Some other turbo engines recommended the use of cooler plugs for long term high speed operation/track use. As, to my understanding, the US Civic is the same as the Euro model where extend high speed operation on the Autobahn is a thing, I don't thing that is applicable in our case as much.

Is that kph or mph?
Otherwise best to set it below what your tires are rated at.
Rev limiter is what save the motor.

By reprogramming the computer that runs your engine, the ECU. There are two companies that are popular on this forum that sells interfaces designed to do that. K-tuner, and Hondata.

To answer the OP's question. The top speed limiter is the manufactures last safety feature that will keep you from driving faster than your cars factory suspension can keep your car stable at under maximum load.
