A mechanic tests his wife's GDI car to see if catch cans work.
Answer : If you get a good quality catch can and install it properly, yes, it probably works.
They do catch a lot of junk that would otherwise go through the intake and gum up the valves.
The oil separating systems that come with the car may not be enough to get rid of much of the goo.
The only way to tell for sure though is to test two similar vehicles over a long period of time (One with a catch can and one without) and check the back of the intake valves. He does not do that here.
He does have another video on the issue of "cold-start misfiring".
