foolishly I quickly became dependent on the convienence of the automatic parking brake.

I’d get in my car, seatbelt, clutch in , push start , press brake hold, in gear, clutch out , drive to destination.

On arrival I drive into spot, gear to neutral and hit the start button.

When I did these things the ebrake was always automatic both releasing when I let the clutch out while feathering the throttle as well and engaging the brake when I turned off the car.

Today I screwed something up. It’s the second time it’s happens in hundreds of trips.

Anyone have any idea what step I’m missing ?

take your seatbelt off before shutting the car down.

when i took my seatbelt off at a left turn to remove a jacket, the parking brake went on automatically

How about just set the parking brake? It's really not hard at all to do. Then, you won't have to worry about whether or not the car was thinking for you.
