Did a quick search and didn't see too much on the rebirth of the Spoon Sports SW388. I'm uploading them onto the site so I figured I'd spread what we know:
The story of the Spoon SW388 starts in 1994. Spoon Sports in conjunction with the Russian Desmond Corporation began to work together with the aim of creating the world's lightest wheel. After two years of research, development, and testing the benchmark SW388 was born; a 15x6.5 +45 4x100 wheel that weighed a mere 3.88 kilograms (8.554 pounds).
As such the name SW388 was born = Spoon Wheel 3.88 KG
From 1996 to 1999 the SW388 was made and sold, with larger sizes and different PCD's being made. However abruptly in 1999 the Desmond Corporation closed its doors and the wheels were no longer made. For nearly 20 years the legend grew as Honda fans hoarded factory spec wheels with original decals and Spoon Authentication. Finally the JDM gods granted us some mercy and Spoon Sports began work with Tan-ei-sya (makers of TWS wheels) to produce an All-Japan-Made Forged SW388 Wheel.
The NEW SW388 will come in a range of sizes for basically all performance Honda's listed below:
The first sample size has been made for the new Civic Hatchback.
18x8.5 +45 5x114.3
7.3 kg per wheel - 16.094 lbs so they're extremely light
MSRP: $1030 per wheel
Classic 5 spoke design SW388 - Desmond Regamaster
Like the SW388 the wheel is not painted but is anodized black. This gives strength to the wheel and adds corrosion resistance, as an added benefit it's lighter than paint so it works perfectly as the wheel's finish.
Made by Tan-Ei-Sya in Japan. They are using a Machined Forged method which takes Die-Forged blanks that are then machined to the exact shape. This is a little different than Mold-Form Forged but it results in a design that is much more intricate.
The back-pad that sits on the hub has an arched design which is designed to disperse the load evenly onto the hub. By doing this the weight is dispersed outward and not solely concentrated onto the area around the studs. This also helps relieve the pressure on lugnuts that causes them to loosen on the track.
