Off topic question. I’m planning on driving down to Maryland for Hday and my si is tagged in NY. NY requires a front license plate at all times. Would I get pulled over if I remove it once out of NY? Is it enforceable in other states IE Maryland or Delaware?TIA

Illinois also requires a front plate but I see cars and suv's on the road all the time with no front plate. some new ones don't even have a place on the front for a plate. IMO it's a chickensh!t law anyway.

I'm in Illinois too & didn't have a front plate for years on my wife's old Toyota because the bracket was broken. However she wanted one on the Civic. But my car does not have a front plate. My neighbor had a Corvette & never had a front plate. Guess we've been lucky. I talked to someone at a local car show who lives in the next suburb & said the police saw the front & made a U-turn & got behind him & stopped him. Not sure why the police suspected he was an IL resident as he could have been from another state. Maybe he was driving aggressively & got their attention.

When I lived in New York a neighbor has a 1978 international scout as far as I could remember never had a front license plate ( NY requires two) even after three plate changes still never had a plate on the front
And never got ticketed. I moved to Florida in 2014 I’m sure my old neighbor still has the scout and there’s no plate on the front

I don't know how Maryland treats out-of-state with a missing front plate that's required in that state, but MD registered cars are pulled over for missing it.

Illinois also requires a front plate but I see cars and suv's on the road all the time with no front plate. some new ones don't even have a place on the front for a plate. IMO it's a chickensh!t law anyway.
True or not, the reason I heard states require them is they make a very nice target for "revenue collection" (radar/laser target). I can't think of a good reason since EVERY encounter with law enforcement checking a vehicle is done using the rear tag. Revenue collection would certainly fit with Maryland's greed. We joke that the state motto is "The fee state."

NEVER give law enforcement a reason to pull you over (even if you are as pure as the
driven snow).

No front plate in a state that requires one? License plate light bulbs burned out? They can pull you over. Had both happen to me when i was just driving down the road minding my own business. And I had my front plate on display in my windshield at the time. $40 ticket (years ago) and threatened with another one if i didn't fix it (judge later reduced the fine to $20). In contrast when i got pulled over for burned out rear plate bulbs the cop just told me where i could buy some bulbs and sent me on my way.

Most law enforcement officers are good people who can act in a professional manner but there are some a$$holes out there and you don't want to meet them.

One dealer said they didn't install the front license plate bracket on performance cars until they discussed it with the buyer. They said I probably would not hassled by the police, but if I was young kid or looked like a trouble maker then I might get a ticket.

If your state does not require a front plate and you're driving through a state that does you will not get pulled over for it. Most officers know their state laws very well but will not/ can not enforce another state's law.

Ohio is stopping the requirement for a front plate.
https://www.10tv.com/article/ohio-l...l-keep-front-license-plates-vehicles-2019-aug

It says they'll save about $1.4 million a year. Illinois should do the same because it's broke.
Illinois may be the most over regulated and politically and economically mismanaged states in the country. Our state govt. in springfield is run by a guy named Mike Madigan who is, arguably, the most corrupt politician in the country. He has absolute power because of his political machine. Illinois now has unpaid debt of over 15 billion dollars(mostly because of outrageously large govt. pensions), and is looking at a deficit of around 3 billion for 2019. So I wouldn't count on springfield to do anything responsible like dropping the front plate requirement.
