Lotta answers on here. I'll go ahead and add my simplest explanation of how a turbo works as well.
A turbocharger forces more air into your engine allowing for more fuel to be added as well, resulting in a more powerful explosion which creates more power. This process is scale-able so you don't have to use 100% power at all times, making the engine more efficient.
