Hey guys. I had the opportunity through a friend of a friend to get some cheap sportlines coming off a car with coils going on so I nabbed them site unseen. They were $120 for 15k miles on them.

Anyway I have them now and see the red paint is chipped/flaked off on the lower side of the upper spring portions. Some surface rust also but I don't see any cracks or deep flaws.

I assume this is normal? Anything I should give pause to before putting them on my car? I thought about sanding them down and refinishing them but no idea if it's worth doing or what paint to use for springs. Any ideas or thoughts appreciated.

When springs get used they will touch, and as a result the paint will chip and it will begin forming some surface rust. However, this shouldnt affect anything regarding the performance of the springs. It is more of a cosmetic issue. If this really does bother you, I recommend getting the springs powder coated :) I believe it should be more than fine however.

Canadian car's undercarriage has some nasty corrosion exposure and related problems.

Have you look into POR15 product line?

To sum it up. Very easy to apply using ordinary paint brush after you get parts clean down to base metal, it is self leveling and final cured finish will be gleaming. High heat/impact/chemical resistant. Even battery acid will have no effect on it. It is most often used to protect and preserve one of and irreplaceable collectable auto parts.

Following examples are over ten years in harsh engine compartment :-

1. I designed my own mirror image coil bracket/rail relocation mounts using T6 aluminum, then mirror polish and coated with POR15 two part clear:-

2. Close up of OEM cast aluminum valve cover, post complete imperfection removal, mirror polish and coated with POR15 clear coat:-

3. Custom finned T6 aluminum Catch Can fitting for heat dissipation, then coated with POR15 clear:-

I choose POR15 due to its many attributes over rather soft powder coating. And I prefer to show my hard work of clear coating mirror finished bare metal over other color schemes POR15 offers. Certainly, you can match many color POR15 offers.
