changing 18x8 wheels to 18x7.5 need tire fitment advice.

I got a set of HPD 18x7.5 rims for a good price. I currently have the 18X8 sport touring wheels on my car but they all have curb rash (don't ask).
any opinion on moving my 235/40R18 tires over to the 18x7.5 wheels? TireRack said the widest tires I could use on 18X7.5 wheels would be 225/40R18 tires.
my 235/40r18 tires are hardly worn. My local tire shop said they could probably put them on the narrower wheel but the tires would probably wear quicker and they couldn't comment on changes in handling. Any advice would be appreciated.

They'll technically fit but you're right at the limit. You should just sell them and take the chance to get a decent set of UHP summer or all seasons. The stock tires suck.
