In all seriousness though, each state has a different policy for determining a total. Washington is one of about 20 states that uses a TLF (total loss formula). Your insurance company will determine the cost of each piece that has to be replaced and is required to list it all out out along with manhours required for replacement and add that to the scrap value of the car. If that final value equals or exceeds the actual cash value of your car prior to the impact then they can declare it a total loss. If that number comes out to less than the cash value of the car prior to impact they can choose to repair OR total it out.

Air bags deploying on new cars is not always a guaranteed total. Don't get me wrong, airbags are very expensive to replace, usually upwards of a grand a piece. In older cars with a lower cash value prior to impact, the detonation of an airbag or worse, multiple airbags, will quickly raise the repair cost and get it close to the cash value. Because your car was relatively new its cash value was substantially higher than say a 2010 model year car.

If there is frame damage, again, not necessarily a total, because your state uses a TFL, but, frame damage makes airbag replacement look cheap to repair and regardless of how new the car is, it often times gets you to nearly 80% of the cash value of the car and its almost entirely impossible to bend the frame without airbag detonation.
