I get the Si isn't the Type R or any High Performance out there but you know what you're getting into, buying so why concern yourself over a few bucks?

I have a few boys who worries about gas mileage but rips the shit out of it?!?

No one is stopping you putting Regular but you're dumbing down the "performance" and makes no sense so why buy it?

I was surprised when I learned my Murano recommends regular just assumed the VQ only take premium but once a month I fill it with premium since I go to Costco Gas.

I used to bitch & complain about prices back then (10 years ago) but I realized there's no sense knowing you can't do anything about it and doesn't hurt that I spend $6+ on Starbucks and I'm going to complain about $0.20 a litre more for premium gas?

Yeah, I find it stupid people complain so much. My Altima is rated for 87. I actually did the math after a year and found out that I get better MPG with 89 than 87, better enough that it was actually much more logical for me to run 89. I found the same to be true on my old Escort. 89 would often run better than 87, I can look but I even had data logs of the knock sensor not going off as much on 89 vs 87 (for those that don't know the Ford Zetec engines has such a sensitive knock sensor just the engine running would trigger it, so one of the first mod speopel did was unplug it). It would even idle smoother.

So when 89 drops closer to 87 in price than 91 or 93 I get that instead. In fact, many cars when you tune them for a higher octane, not only do you get better performance but you also get better MPG.

In short, people ONLY see the pump price, not the penny per mile price since it's easier to complain than do the math.

SIDE FACT: not sure how true this is but I have read that 87 oct at the pump is just 85 gas+ 10% ethanol, and 89oc is 87 gas + ?% ethanol. When car companies do much of their test on their private pumps, which are really 87 gas, no ethanol. Which is why 89oct at the pump often burns better, it is the same oct rating, but due to being a better gas/ethanol ratio it burns better.

Even with my regular Civic, some 87 from big name gas stations definitely slows the car down. The last time I got 87 from Speedway the car had noticeably less pep. I put in midgrade after and it definitely had more power. No difference between midgrade and premium though.

Definetly all in your head, unless you have a turbo on your Civic...

Unless specifically tuned for 93 or 91 it really makes no difference.

Yes, my multiple spread sheets covering 30 tanks of gas tracking price per mile is all in my head. Please sit in the back of class with the slow kids.

Not talking to you, was referring to the person who feels like their car is faster with 91 or 93 on their butt dyno.

Sorry for not being more specific I ate paint as a child.

But it also sounds like you need a new hobby besides fuel tank logging lol

They could be right. Not by much, however. If 87 is triggering their knock sensor (if their car has one) the car will pull timing produce lower MPG/HP and not doing so on 89 then their car will run more (properly called for) timing and run/perform better. On the Ford Zetecs the difference is 3-5whp depending on the car and how bad 87 was in your area. Not a lot of power today but it was when cars only made 130hp.

It may not be the power difference they feel, but the smoother powerband can be very noticeable depending on how bad the effect is to begin with.

Personally, if I use something less than 93, my piston rings will be fried in short order, if I'm lucky.:D

Luckily, here in Canada, most of our premium gas is also ethanol free, so you might not see a performance gain, but you wont have to worry about your motor getting all bunged up from the corn either :)

Here in Ontario only two are, Shell and Costco. Other provinces different?

True.

Unless the regular gas used is so crappy that makes the car feel the same way as the gas.

The manufacturer is the one that says what octane is recommended or mandatory. There are many turbo cars out there that regular gas is the recommended option.

At least in Florida. Most gas provider offer additives in their premium gas. That really sucks if you have a non premium gas car.

If the manufacture goes out of their way to put a label on the car "premium fuel only" or "Min 91 Octane"...I will be putting what the manufacture recommends in my vehicle.

There is a lot more going on within the engine than what you think you can feel.

If you buy a Si don't worry about fuel economy although its still great and put premium otherwise buy the 2.0 or 1.5.
