Sometimes I hear a fan like noise or something that is spinning coming from the engine bay or perhaps just somewhere in the dash. I hear it during idle or when the car stops. I hear it for about 5-10 seconds then it goes away. It sounds like a computer hard drive that spins for the first time when it powers up or a small fan that produces an audible high pitch noise. Anyone hearing the same? What is it?

OK, after playing with the diagnostic mode settings for the HU, there is indeed a fan in there! That could be what you're hearing. You would be able to notice it more if you have the engine off, with accessory mode on and actively using the HU.

If it is very loud, you might want to have the dealer check it out.

Hi bhorn, thanks for the response. How to access the diagnostic mode?

OK, this is definitely not the fan noise coming from the HU. The noise is coming from the engine compartment. It's a high pitch winding noise. It's not too loud but loud enough to notice inside the car. I hear it when I first drive the car (after pressing the brake pedal and put the shifter into either drive or reverse) and during decelerating to complete stop. I am guessing that this noise is coming from the CVT? I hope that this is normal. Anyone hearing the same?

I took this video so that everyone can hear what I am talking about. Noise is at 8sec. Planning to drop by at the dealership this weekend.

I have the same fan noise occasionally, though yours seems louder. I have a Civic Touring. I've noticed it mostly when idling...

I'd put $10 down on it being the rad cooling fan.

It's electric and will kick on and off as required.

That's what I thought too but when I popped the hood and tried to listen where it's coming from, it's not from the radiator fan. The radiator fan sounded different. The noise is coming from somewhere at the back of the engine.

Was that a cold start? I know the turbo kicks in at 1700rpm, maybe that's what you heard?

Keep us posted on what you find out. Haven't noticed this on my touring.

I'd take it in. Doesn't sound like anything I've heard before or something that should be there.
