Saw auto show coverage and articles about the coming Insight, which is apparently a derivative of the current Civic Platform. One of the sources of weight savings, to offset the additional drivetrain components, is an aluminum hood. Anyone know about how much of a weight reduction it may represent? Any chance it will be a direct swap for factory hoods on any of the Civics?

The platform isn't the body. The hoods aren't even the same shape.

I didn't inspect via a side-by-side. Only noticed the side panels differed a bit. I'll take your word on it.

My Hatchback has an aluminum hood. Why don't you just buy an OEM civic hood?

The factory hood feels pretty heavy. I thought it was steel..

Ok new solution for hood weight savings. You remove your steel hood and just plastic wrap from fender to fender over the engine bay.

Cons:

no cons.

Pros:

1. Weight savings.
2. Water proof.
3. Engine stays fresh for up to 2 weeks.
4. Desirable 90s radio shack see through phone aesthetic.

Does a magnet stick to it? It's really thin steel that feels like aluminum.

It doesn’t tho. Only the Rs hood is aluminum. Your hood is the same part number as the LX hatch. They are steel.
Interesting, this is pretty light for a steel hood.

Honestly if it was aluminum it would prob be more rigid in my opinion this sucker flexes all over the place. It’s real thin
squishy hood, the worst noises come out of it when it gets hit by rocks

If you want weight savings, why not buy a carbon hood?
