Generally speaking... if you want to short cycle maintenance which would represent more profit to the dealer then... yes... they will do that for you. I'm at ~6 months/6k and 40% life left so I hear you. I have heard of some folks being told by the dealer to wait until 20% on the factory fill. Might call ahead and ask.

I got around 10k out of the Odyssey last time... though I had 3 trips back and forth between GA and VA at ~1350 miles a pop in a few months... so that doesn't make it move much. I did let to go until it hit 5%...

The dealer, or anyone really, will change your oil whenever you want. It doesn’t matter to them. If you have a coupon for a free one, it’s the same to them either way. If you are paying for one, they will gladly take your money, just like any other business that shoots for positive profits.

I get free oil changes for the lifetime of the car so I assumed they wouldn't just let me roll in whenever

Ah... free oil changes... that sounds expensive. :D

In that case... you're asking the wrong people. Call the dealership. I'm sure they'll give you a definitive yea or nay.

So true.

"Uh sir, your trans fluid looks low and you need a rotation and those brake pads could use replacing and your wiper blades are worn out and uh... Oh yeah you need your free oil change too." ;)

Changing your oil prematurely won't cause damage to anything except your wallet. However, you may notice higher-than-normal oil consumption and/or fuel dilution for a longer period of time.

Dealers will happily oblige your request to change the oil as early and often as you desire...unless you have "free oil changes for life". It's funny how they recommend changing oil every 5K or even 3K for paying customers, but non-paying customers who are entitled to perpetual oil changes at no cost are advised not to change the oil or refused an oil engine until the Maintenance Minder reaches 15% or less. ;)

Is there a warning for low engine oil ?
Last time I checked my oil was more than a month ago.

No, there is no warning light for low oil level - only low oil pressure (which won't come on until the oil level falls below the pickup tube for the oil pump).

The owner's manual recommends checking the oil level at every fill-up.
