Understanding that honda has never done AWD in a civic, I'm betting that a few years after the FWD TypeR comes out, Acura will jump in with a hatch turbo AWD.
My '91 Civic Wagon RT4WD begs to differ with your statement.

If the Type-R comes in around $30K, I don't think it will even need AWD to be competitive. It certainly doesn't need it to be competitive at the Nurburgring

$30k would be tough, though I'd welcome it. Most think it will be at least $35k :(

For AWD and 300+ I'd be willing to spend 35-37K for a true competitor to the Focus RS. I dont think they need to do that but it would make some BIG headlines and steal sales away from Ford/VW.
