Here's a way to shorten the OEM shifter while keeping the OEM shift boot retainer/collar that serves as a locknut under the knob.
I used a 10mm x 1.50 die as a guide to hacksaw 2 cm off the top of the shift rod.
Then I cut threads down the length of the rod to the first bend.
Height of the shift ball is now 8.5 cm above the console in the neutral position.
Simply shortening length of the shifter shaft shortens the throw, and gave me more accurate shifts.

Thinking of doing this now that I have an Acuity ESCO knob installed that sits a bit higher than the stock knob.

Let us know how it works for you!
I've done it on three separate cars now, and always had good results.
