It's really not enforced anywhere and if so it's rare or the cop has a grudge on you. I wouldn't worry about it.

They deserve a ticket. It is completely absurd to leave the keys in ignition while idling with noone around. In the place I work at, you would'nt know the countless times cars have been stolen with keys in the ignition. If you remote start, I highly dought any sane cop will give you a ticket. If it was this "illegal", manufacturers would not include remote start with their cars.

My 2 cents by the way

  1. Arizona
  2. California
  3. Colorado
  4. Connecticut
  5. Delaware
  6. District of Columbia
  7. Georgia
  8. Hawaii
  9. Illinois
  10. Louisiana
  11. Maine
  12. Maryland
  13. Massachusetts
  14. Minnesota
  15. Missouri
  16. Nevada
  17. New Hampshire
  18. New Jersey
  19. New York
  20. Ohio
  21. Oregon
  22. Pennsylvania
  23. Rhode Island
  24. South Carolina
  25. Texas
  26. Utah
  27. Vermont
  28. Virginia
  29. Washington
  30. Wisconsin
  31. Wyoming"
I have the privilege to live in one of the most free places in the world: TN.
Tennessee sounds good to me.

Those who say "it's not enforced here" should look out. It may be enforced tomorrow. In many (all?) EU  countries there is a total ban on running the engine when the driver is outside the car (even right by it and touching it) as being unsafe. You can get fined doubly: for that, and for running the car longer than one minute in an urban area for noise and pollution. It is simply Totally Verboten to have the engine on while scraping windows and removing snow for any time, period. Drivers commonly get fined for this, and the cop doesn't need to look at his watch at all. Additionally, if you are out of the car on a public road you may need to wear the famous gilet jaune.

Of course any snow or ice on the car (not only windows and mirrors but snow on all surfaces including the roof ) is also punishable by a ticket. So, if driving over there in winter, you may want to read advice in local media "How to legally remove snow from your car".

We have some crazy laws on the books in the US...

1. In Fairbanks, Alaska, it is illegal to serve alcohol to a moose.

2. In Glendale, Arizona, it is illegal to drive a car in reverse, so virtually everyone in a mall parking lot is breaking the law.

3. In San Francisco, California, it is illegal to wipe your car with used underwear. So, is it okay to use clean underwear?

4. In Quitman, Georgia, it's illegal to change the clothes on a storefront mannequin unless the shades are down.

5. In South Bend, Indiana, it's illegal for monkeys to smoke cigarettes. Apparently cigars are okay, but only if the monkey goes outside.

6. In New Orleans, Louisiana, it's against the law to gargle in public.

7. In Boston, Massachusetts, it's illegal to take a bath unless one has been ordered by a physician to do so.

8. In Minnesota, women may face 30 days in jail for impersonating Santa Claus.

9. In Hornytown, North Carolina, it's illegal to open a massage parlor.

10. In Fargo, North Dakota, it's illegal to lie down and fall asleep with your shoes on.

11. In Oxford, Ohio, it is illegal for a woman to disrobe in front of a man's picture. Is it legal if his eyes are closed in the photo?

12. In Oklahoma, people who make ugly faces at dogs can be fined or jailed. Apparently, it's okay for bulldogs to make ugly faces at people because they can't help it.

13. In Marion, Oregon, ministers are forbidden from eating garlic or onions before delivering a sermon.

14. In Morrisville, Pennsylvania, women need a permit to wear makeup.

15. In South Dakota, it's illegal to lie down and fall asleep in a cheese factory.

16. At restaurants in Memphis, Tennessee, all pie must be eaten on the premises, as it is illegal to take unfinished pie home.

17. In Utah, birds have the right-of-way on all highways.

18. In Seattle, Washington, women who sit on men's laps on buses or trains without placing a pillow between them face an automatic six-month jail term.

19. In Nicholas County, West Virginia, no clergy member may tell jokes or humorous stories from the pulpit during church services.

20. In St. Croix, Wisconsin, women are not allowed to wear anything red in public.

I'll have to find the statute, but I think in VA getting caught using remote start is a Class 6 Felony punishable with up to 3 years in state prison.

So who is watching the watchers? I see cops idling all the time!

Beware, y'all, it's a slippery slope from this to some other nonsense (apparently like the EU laws).

I work with many from VA. They say radar detectors are illegal as well. I guess you don't have many rights if you live there. Big Brother always watching.

If I lived in VA I would have an abundance of dash cams recording everything. Plus my hidden Escort 8500i hidden radar installed. You can clock me but I can record it. And record all when you pull me over. Will it do any good? No. Judges can throw you in jail for just days. Is there true justice? Not really. Really not into breaking the law. Not into speeding.

Yes, I would agree.

"According to the E.P.A 31 states and Washington, D.C., have such regulations. Time regulations vary per state and county, make sure to check out the specifics of your area's laws on your own. Many states offer exceptions with exceedingly low temperatures. In Georgia, for example, if the temperature is less than 32 degrees Fahrenheit, idling is allowed for up to 25 minutes."

I would think 5 and 10 minutes max would be enough to warm up the car so it is safe to drive. I did not say it would be hot or comfortable inside. And, where I work if you want to smoke or vape you have to go to the designated place in the parking deck. Many just idle in their cars smoking. Not great for the rest of us.
