Hi All,

I changed my oil today-42,000 miles on my Si. There was significant oil residue on the oil pan-source was somewhere above the corner of the oil pan near where the oil filter housing is. Leak originates somewhere behind all the pulleys and drive belts. Isn’t that where the main crankshaft seal would be located? Would this be covered under warranty? It is a recent development, 5,000 miles ago this was bone dry.

So it definitely wasn’t coming from the oil filter gasket?
No, the oil filter itself was dry, I stuck a light up there and the oil residue extended above the level of the oil pan-I simply followed the residue up to the point where the pulleys on the side of the engine obstructed view.

Does it look like this? Mine is doing this too at last oil change. Cleaned up and will monitor. I’m at 28k miles.

Dam that sucks bro. Keep up posted on the outcome. If the identical issue is happening on both the cars.. I'm sure it's happening to more of them. My guess is this is residual or there's some sort of seal/gasket leak.

I've seen these seals replaced under warranty, I would let a dealer look at it ASAP.

It could be the crank seal but more likely it's the inspection cover on that side of the block. Mines leaking as well slightly, it's just a matter of removing it and adding new honda bond.

Its covered under warranty so just book it in and have them taken care of it. Shouldnt take more than 1 to 2 hours.

Thank you, I’ll definitely be taking it in within the next few weeks.

Any confirmation on the source of your oil leak? Just looked under my car and have similar oil pattern on the bottom end. The inspection cover sounds a lot easier to fix than the crank seal, so hoping that's the common issue here.

So, when I took it into the dealer to have it looked at (this was like 20,000 miles ago), the tech told me that they cleaned they area and couldn't find anything leaking. They thought it was residue from a past oil change, but I knew that I hadn't spilled significant oil because I did all the changes myself. They said check in 1,000 miles and see if anything comes back. I'll be damned but the thing has not leaked a drop since... I was convinced that it was the inspection cover, maybe they tightened the two bolts when they were inspecting? I can't say for sure.

Had this developing on my '18 Si. The source looked to be somewhere behind the pulleys as well. Never got around to getting it looked at but my oil pan was always covered in oil residue and it was definitely coming from the pulley side of the motor.

Car's gone now but just wanted to let you know it's not some kind of fluke.

Thanks for the info guys! I cleaned up what I could reach last night, so we'll see if I get more accumulation after some driving. Up to now I've had my services done by the dealership. Just had oil changed 2 weeks ago, so either this is a fairly quick leak or this issue is pretty common and they didn't bother to clean up or mention it. No oil level drop, so doesn't seem like a big issue yet. I'll keep an eye on it for now, and maybe tighten up the inspection cover bolts. Definitely will be taking care of my own basic maintenance from now on.

My 20 Si just hit 5500 miles so figured change oil and filter. I had oil all over the tray and flung all over back lower firewall area. Looked like 2 leaks. Looked like oil drain bolt leaking as it had a drop of clean oil on it but also noticed a drop of oil in a different area bottom of trans area but that plug was dry....

Cleaned up, wix filter/ultra Pennzoil and will see what it looks like in 500 miles. H
