New to Honda Mirror question

I have a 2016 EX-T.
What is the deal with the left mirror and the line running vertical? Looks like it is supposed to be a visual aid. Not sure how to use it. Mostly it just messes with my eyes.

Yeah, it's supposed to help you see a little further over, but they got rid of it for the 2017 model so customers must not have liked it.
