Apparently, there will be a new industry standard oil formulation specially designed for modern GDI engines that will be available next year. It will help resolve some of the known problems in these engines.

You mean oils like this?

https://www.valvoline.com/our-products/motor-oil/modern-engine-full-synthetic-motor-oil

Or maybe like this?

https://mobiloil.com/en/article/why-the-mobil-advantage/mobil-1-modern-engines

Or maybe this?

https://www.pennzoil.com/en_us/education/know-your-oil/what-you-need-to-know-about-api-sn-plus.html

Any oil that is SN+ and Dexos 1 Gen 2 is designed for TGDI engines.

No there's new certification coming out in 2020 and the oil is still in testing phase. I guess Scottykilmer posted a video about it 2-3 days ago

Mobil and Penzoil say their oils are likely already meeting the GF-6 standards (as far as they are final) or are quite close.

"Mobil 1 motor oils currently meet or exceed the current industry standard (ILSAC GF-5), and are in the process of being tested against the new ILSAC GF-6 standards. Our initial tests indicate our current formulations are GF-6 capable."

Yep... GF-6. It’s been on its way a long time with the intermediate plus rating being a stopgap. Oil has long been determined to be a major variable in LSPI. You can prevent it with engine design somewhat, but you can help prevent it in existing engine designs that are susceptible through use of proper oils. There’s a few decent tech write ups on the interwebs about it.
