IMO, the list lost credibility at #15. Hyundai Elantra

but I do agree the Civics will have minimal problems reaching 250k miles

both the K-series and L-series engines are super reliable, capable of reaching even 500k miles and more

There are K engines approaching 800K. L remains to be seen.

Agreed. Elantra on the list but no Corolla? Not impressed with the list.

What evidence is there that L engines are "super reliable".

There's numbers for K engines going back to 2002.

L may even be more reliable. It's hard to believe that when you add more systems with their associated part counts and complexity like turbo and a flawed DI implementation that it can somehow increase reliability over a K series engine.

I'm willing to be proven wrong but I suspect this will take some time. Any claim that an L series engine is more reliable than a K isn't evidence based at the present time.

I'll know in 9 more years at my current rate. With maintenance, there is really no reason any car can't get 150K miles without trying.. 200K is certainly within reach.. 250K seems likely (my old vw, my previous car, got to 220K miles before I bailed).

But since most cars are leased, not many original owners care.. comes down to the 3rd-5th owners.. or your "kids" who buy them cheap.. and by then who cares.. they are just old cars.

I know everyone "knows someone who got 400,000 miles out of their car", but in reality very few cars make it to 200,000 miles. Those high-mileage examples are rare and almost always involve mostly "highway miles". The average owner gets less than 200,000 miles before the vehicle is scrapped. Although you could keep the vehicle almost indefinitely if you keep repairing it, the reliability falls and the cost to keep it on the road climbs as the vehicle gets older. The following is the % of each model that has more than 200,000 miles and is still on the road.

Longest-lasting passenger cars
  1. Toyota Avalon, 2.5
  2. Honda Odyssey, 2.5
  3. Honda Accord, 1.9
  4. Toyota Sienna, 1.8
  5. Toyota Prius, 1.7
  6. Chevrolet Impala, 1.7
  7. Ford Taurus, 1.6
  8. Toyota Camry, 1.4
  9. Toyota Camry Hybrid, 1.2
  10. Honda Civic, 1.2
All-passenger-car average: 0.6

So, 1.2% of the Civics on the road have more than 200,000 miles. I suspect that most last between 100,000 and 200,000 miles.

Currently at 352,000 on my 1997 Toyota Tacoma. Clutch finally failed last month. Replaced the catalytic converter 3x, header 2x, right front ball joint 3x, driver side interior door handle 4x, ecu 2x (yeah, go figure).

AC still stock and running.
Seats need replacing.

My 2019 Si sedan has 367miles on it, had it since Jan 9. Plan on driving it until 250,000 miles at least. Been babying it, modding, and only Sunday driving it. Soon, it will be my daily, dependable, monster driver....
