I would never change the oil that way, not sure who would, cause your never going to get nearly as much oil out, as you would by removing the drain plug

I do things properly, not the half assed way
Many shops change oil via fluid extractor. Oil through the dipstick, and if the filter is housed up top, no need to waste paid time and a lift to raise the car if you’re getting all the oil out, which you know because you measure what comes out. If the car has a 4 quart capacity, and you evacuate 4 quarts via extractor... then you got everything you should get. Refill and move on.

If it’s a good enough process for temperamental European shops, I think it’s fine for a Civic.

That is one of the many reasons why I do it myself, like I said, I do things properly, not half assed like you describe,

You would never find this method to be approved at a Honda dealership, or in their service manual,

Any shop who changes oil the way you describe should be avoided,
You’re right, I may never find that method approved at a Honda dealership, but I can and will find it approved and encouraged at some certified AMG and BMW M service centers, as well as Audi/Lamborghini service centers.

You realize depending on the design of the oil pan, you may actually get more oil out via extraction than by drain plug, right?

So you don't count for the oil dilution?

All the hype about oil dilution and the fact that as long as the engine lasts thru the warranty period Honda could care less makes me change my oil at the intervals I'm comfortable with. And, I'm not sitting in the dealer lounge while they dent, scratch, rush through the oil change, and joy-ride my car....
I know, I'm paranoid but that sort of thing does happen. Ask anyone that's ever worked at a dealership.
In this great land of ours we all have the privilege of choosing our own OCI (cue patriotic music).

You can't use an oil extractor on my 2020 coupe because the dip stick hole is too small for the extractor tube.
Not sure about the other 10th gen years.

I doubt the dipstick hole is different on any 1.5T. Isn't the dipstick exactly the same?

I easily suck the oil out using a piece of tubing and a large syringe for partial mid-OCI oil changes. Pulled up to 2.5 qt of oil quickly. No problem with pulling it all out. I also have an extractor with a hand pump, which would make it even faster, but I never used it so far. If the tubing on the extractor is too thick, I would replace it with the same size as I use with my syringe.

No need to lift the car makes it very fast and no space around the car is needed.

A syringe is also great for sampling oil for analysis. Which I have never done so far, but I will one day, just for fun.

Works fine on my 10th Gen. Most evacuators come with multiple size tubes.
