I was having this discussion and it's probably one that to find the answer you'd have to review TSB data over time, but that probably still does not change perception.

Back in the 80s Honda and Toyota brought a level of quality from their engineering and JIT concepts which was superior to other car mfg. Do you think that both brands still have the same quality or have been riding their past coats and not delivering ?

I think the American cars before really did have some quality concerns, but after the 2 bankruptcies in 2009, I think the Big 3 are now more comparable to the Japanese than they have been overtime. They still carry though semi-bloated car portfolios and too many models/brands but have trimmed a lot (Saturn........Pontiac........junk)

Korean car mfg were also considered garbage in the past......I think Kia still is, but Hyundai I think has improved....Daewoo is gone, but I remember that car in the past....also junk.

Never owned anything German or European..... I don't think I will.....Japanese vehicles are just more user friendly for DIY.

What say ye ?

I have been a mopar fan since I have been driving. I had a 2013 chrysler 200 with the v6 and had it since brand new until 40000 miles. Never gave a single problem. I have a 2015 200 with the same engine and this thing has given more problems than a car with 18000 miles should be. Ever since FCA bought out mopar it has been terrible. This honda is by no means perfect but I paid 20000 for it so it is what I expect. It is better than my 35000 dollar chrysler. To me being this is my first Honda I love it. I do plan in a couple years buying a scat pack charger so I am not completely done with them but I love this car and plan on keeping it as long as it will run lol. I had a mercedes as well and that didn't last 3 months. It was a diesel and the MAF sensor kept going bad every couple months. I kept changing it myself because I bought it used and the warranty was done. I got tired of changing it so I took it to the dealer and they said the fix was 2900 dollars. Another thing I love about Honda is the parts are cheap compared to cars like that. I think I am sold on Honda and plan on buying one for my wife when her car is paid for.

I've had,a few chevys, two fords,a jeep, a Hyundai, two nissans, a Plymouth, two Toyotas and now this Honda.
The chevys all were pretty much problems from the day I had them, with A Beretta being the biggest and an s10 not far behind. The two fords,a Taurus and a ranger, garbage. I had a hatchback Sentra, which was pretty decent, but my Nissan truck had a lot of problems. My first Toyota,a truck had a cracked block with in a month of me getting it,but once they took care of it, I never had any issues after that. Had a 97 tercel and other than paint issues, it had 145,000 on it when I sold it to get my new civic.
The 95 Plymouth acclaim I had had around 210,00 miles on it when it hit totaled and again, other than the horrible paint on it,ran exceptionally well, and was a very solid car. The 98 jeep Cherokee sport also was pretty solid and was actually the only car I ever bought and kept long enough to fully pay off.
Next up was a 2006 Tucson. Had no issues with it in the five years I had it.
This civic, I have it in the shop about six times in less than a year ,all for the same issues ,random stuff with the head unit.
So my take on your question is, I won't buy another American made car,the jeep and acclaim were decent, but aren't made or aren't made the same anymore in my opinion. Ford and Chevy, I never had any luck with. The Nissan was ok on the Sentra, but not the truck. I don't care for nissans styling these days. The Toyotas I had ,overall were great cars, one issue that was taken care of right away with the truck. Loved the Tucson, but have heard the quality on them has really gone downhill.
Haven't had the civic long enough to really say,but if I continue to keep having all these issues with the head unit,I'll probably buy a Toyota again the next time around.

We always had Toyota my wife and me. Just change oil and put gas, new front break at 60,000, that's all.
And we keep them 11 and 15 years.
My wife bought the 2016 Civic ( in my name on the forum) because 2016 Toyota are few thousand $ more expensive for same equipment and I convinced her to try Civic ' cause I like the look and I'm tired of Toyota .
She don't like the Civic very much......
I don't think Civic will be trouble free like our old Toyota. Is 2016 Toyota will be trouble free ? I don't know , Consumer Mag say yes.

Now I'm looking to buy a new car, and I have no choice to buy a Civic...

I normally only keep cars for 3-5 years so it'll be hard for me to judge on long term reliability. I've always owned only Japanese and German and neither have had major issues but again...it's only for a max of 5 years. When I bought the Civic, I was thinking long term this time. My son will be able to drive in 3 years and at that time I can also retire if I want to. So my plan is to give him the Civic when he can drive and I'll buy myself a retirement gift for myself. I have always wanted an AMG or an Audi "S" model....specifically the S5 Sportback.

I have never owned an American brand car but if I were to buy one it would be a Cadi ATS-V, CTS-V, or a truck.

Report wise Toyota and Honda still seem to be at the top of the. Sure there could be a problem-free 1990 Ford Escort or a new Honda Civic that is a total lemon so statistical outliers, but I think generally overall the data still seems to trend in that way.....unlike Tesla which is nothing but problems. I did see this YouTube video made last year. If I spent $70,000 on a car with this many issues I'd be pretty unhappy:

For 3 to 5 year you can't say, it is so short.

The best way to predict the future is to look at the past. General consensus around here among local mechanics is that "the rest" aren't diligent enough with their component manufacturers. The standards to which 3rd party contractors build their components aren't as rigorous as those set by Toyota (followed closely by Honda). They've gotten better, to the point that a typical car will go 80-100K without major issue. But Toyota still holds the benchmark here. Hence why most Honda/Toyota models retain more of their value as the miles accumulate.

Additionally, "the rest" don't modularize from a maintenance/service perspective. At least not to the level of some Japanese-managed firms. The Kaizen philosophy still runs deep among the engineers at Toyota and Honda. And their #1 priority is simplicity in a landscape governed by complex safety & emissions regulations. There will always be exceptions, as is the case with the Civic's infotainment lol.

This readout pretty much says it all:

Honda Civic 10th gen Honda/Toyota reliability vs other mfgs ? Over180k

Just so you know on the Korean cars.. Hyundai owns KIA and the Genesis brands, Daewoo was bought out by Chevrolet (Chevy Sonic is actually a Daewoo)... What I would like to see here is a Sangyong (Owned by Samsung), they are comparable to Jeep here in the states. I actually owned a Samyong Rexton, when I lived there....
In my opinion, I think KIA, especially since the release of the Stinger, has come a long way , and look forward to what they can follow up on...
Hey its just my $.02......

This is my personal history with owning new cars. I'm both old and not rich so I've mostly owned inexpensive cars but I always tried to getting sharp and sporty ones. And I usually keep them for a while.

My first car was a 1976 Pontiac Sunbird. That car cost me $2500 brand new! The thing didn't even have FM radio, only AM. Roll up windows. But it was rock solid reliable. So much so that I traded it in on a...

1979 Firebird Trans Am. Bright red with a silver screaming bird on the hood. I loved that car. Lots of power. But ultimately the AT was crap on it and I got rid of it. I decided to buy my first Honda...

A 1984 Honda CRX. Great fun to drive little car. My first manual transmission. Overall, very reliable. Only issue was subpar paint.

My next car was a 1987 Acura Integra. That car was fun! What a high revving engine and slick manual. Put 114,000 on it and then... the timing belt broke. Totally my own fault due to not replacing it in time. Car was extremely reliable. Sold it as is to a mechanic who worked at the Honda dealership.

Bought a 1984 Civic EX to replace it. Nowhere near as fun as the as the engine or handling of the Integra, but nice and reliable. Only issues were a heat shield that kept falling off and weak A/C.

I was a big Honda fan but with me now being a married man with a young kid money was much tighter. So I went for a less expensive car next. A 2002 Hyundai Elantra GT hatch. I really didn't know what to expect but the price was right. Turned out the car was very good. The engine and manual transmission weren't as good as my Hondas but they weren't bad at all. The car was rock solid reliable. Sadly, the car was totaled in a near head on collision but it was a safe car cause I walked away with barely a scratch.

My next car was a 2010 Kia Forte SX sedan. Had some nice pickup from it's 2.4 liter engine. Totally reliable. Only needed to do routine maintenance. Excellent car. Only sour point was a harsh suspension but it did handle well. Traded it in in May 2017 for...

My 2017 Cosmic Blue Civic EX-L sedan. It's early, but this is a fantastic vehicle from Honda.

Sorry for the long post.

I had the 2002 Elantra GT til it was totaled in that accident in 2010. Bought the 2010 Forte SX in 2010 and traded it for my 2017 Civic this past May. No warranty issues whatsoever with that car, just wanted a new car.

With other manufacturers I only had a Chrysler product and I have never had problems with my 12 Ram 1500 truck and I towed and hauled with it. That Hemi in the truck seemed bulletproof but I also took care of it so take that for what it is worth. I have had relatives that had Honda and they say they have never had an issue with them over the years and that was one of the reasons why I bought mine.
