The Cavalier Z24 was actually not a bad car, it was what I would call a "buggy car". It had a pretty advanced for it's time aluminum DOHC MPFE 2.8L V6 that was pretty smooth, acceleration was not that bad at 0 to 60 in about 7.5 seconds. It suffered mostly from electronic woes, it was among some of the first engines that were computer controlled (it used an EPROM) and had an all electronic dashboard

Of course the dash was prone to going out, and I had to have it rebuilt, which costed me $500 (it had to be pulled out and sent to the dealership). Also the EPROM was buggy, and since it was read only, the only way to update it was to replace it, which of course costed me another $500. It also developed oil leaks from the oil pan seals, and I had to have the radiator rebuilt. It only had 70K on it! By the time I sold it, I had spent about an estimated $5K
That always seems to be a problem from Chevy oil leaks. Was it a fastback or notch back?
Btw that instrument panel is screaming 1980s:thumbsup:

Haha yep! I almost want to get one for nostalgia's sake! It was a 2 door coupe with trunk. It looked exactly like the one pictured except the one I owned was white with red trim. Also it had a spoiler in the front which it looks like the was removed on this one, probably because it always scrapped driveways and speed bumps

It actually could have been a really good car had they kept developing and improving it, but GM kept changing directions. They up'd the engine in 89 to a 3.1, but then made it a 4 cylinder in 90 and moved this engine to the Lumina, which was a terrible body design. They started coming out with cars like the Corsica and other crap like that. They ended up making the Cavalier so fricken ugly that by 2005 it died

It was a horrible car. I drove several rentals, and yes, it is a good thing you never bought one. I have not even seen one on the road in the last 20 years

My friends mother had a Lumina minivan which also had loads of problems you don’t see them on the roads either

Haha 90's boy! By 1995-96 I was getting established in my career and was driving a 1995 Toyota Corolla 5 speed manual. By Summer of 97 I got married. Go back to 85-86 and I was driving a Black GTi and dressing like Don Johnson (Miami Vice was the thing). I would post some pics, but their stored away somewhere in a photo album!

That least the black GTi was cool looking at that time so it’ll go with that Miami vice time here’s pics of two cars I’ve owned in 85/86 same colors too ( the 63 rambler was given to me in 85)

It's too bad you didn't hang on to the 63 Rambler. If it was still in good condition it could've been worth some money. All the cars I owned from 16 to about 24 I ended up either junking or giving away (75 VW Rabbit, 85 VW GTi, 76 Mercedes 280), the 87 Cavalier Z24 I traded in for an 95 Toyota Corolla, which stayed in the family until 2015. It had over 200k on it and still ran great when my nephew traded it in for a Prius

It is not the same 2.0T engine configuration used across those models. Even minor changes between similar engine configurations would require inventory/production management as different SKU’s, as well as a line changeover for production of the different variants (and the differences between the K20C1 and K20C4 are not minor). There are significant costs associated with these requirements, particularly due to the relatively low production volume of the K20C1.

$6K is the approximate difference in the replacement costs between the two engines. Even if the difference in the manufacturer’s cost is significantly less than $6k, they have no incentive to pass any cost savings along to you. As such, comparing the retail replacement price of the two provides an accurate estimate.
They have no incentive because the existing lineup already includes the 1.5L. What I'm saying is that their cost of building various 1.5L iterations as compared to various 2.0L iterations is probably negligible, and they could have simply chosen to use the 2.0L in various states of tune just as it currently exists within their lineup. The fact that they sell a more desirable crate engine at a higher price does not necessarily indicate any financial restriction in initial product design choices. Those choices were made to satisfy emissions restrictions, not production costs. Comparing the retail replacement price is only an accurate estimate of how much Honda believes they can get people to pay for one vs the other. Although, it looks like a Type R crate engine can be acquired for 6.5K, so I suppose I shouldn't complain if you are saying that they are now selling the 1.5L for $500. Send me that link, I'll buy two! Track days are about to get a lot more interesting if you can blow a motor for no more than the cost of a set of cheap tires.
