I like it. The dependable, predictable, and unpretentious Corolla is getting slightly more "fun" as a bonus.

Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't the Corolla already the best selling compact car?

Depends on jurisdiction and whether you include "fleet sales".
I am pretty sure that the Civic has been outselling the Corolla in private sales in North America for the last 3 years. I think that the Corolla sells better world wide and a lot of Toyotas are sold to rental companies.

I think this Corolla could be a hit. Good looks, well equipped, safe, reliable and with just enough power to actually have a bit of fun. Hits all the selling points in the category. On the other hand, I guarantee you the next gen Civic will blow this away. :)

I wish Honda would step up to the plate with newer engine technologies. I heard they are working on a 1.8t dual port, to tell you the truth, it should have been here by now. With oil dilution issues plaguing good auto reports by outlets, it will hurt them in the near future. CR ratings for the current version is very low.

You make a good point. Funny you say rental car fleets, every time I rent from Enterprise, it's either a Camry or a Corolla.

I wouldn't say it's "not even close"

This is a very strong effort on Toyota's part. It will be interesting to see if we get a TRD trim, probably will be on the hatch.

The only way the Corolla compares favorably to the Civic is in the LX trim. Throw in the 1.5T and I dont see how it's a competition.

Meh Toyota could have done better for this new generation. I'm not impressed with the fuel economy figures compared to the Civic. Toyota could have made the new 2.0 liter engine standard across all trims and have better gas mileage/power with the lower trims. The hybrid fuel economy is impressive but if they would have offered the 2.0 liter on lower trims levels, there would be no need for the hybrid. I'm guessing Toyota wanted an alternative to the hideous Prius.

So it's not a competition solely because of the powertrain? The Corolla will definitely outsell the Civic until we get the 11th gen.

Doubt it. I see a lot more camrys then corollas. The new Camry is way nicer looking with a 4 cylinder
