1.5" gave the exhaust a different tone, not loud but I can hear it better with some teeny pop and crackle.

allows some of the exhaust gas to bypass the mufflers.. suppose to make the exhaust have more character while still retaining tame

Yes, in a sense, because cutouts allow you to have both a muffled and fully open exhaust installed essentially at the same time. This mod is kind of an in-between.

Not sure if there are any gains but I feel like it sounds a bit better than stock.

If I ever decide to modify my original exhaust I might route the bypass pipes straight for better flow? ^^

For a mod like this, the flow gains would be minimal. If you're worried about flow at that point, I'd go with a full muffler delete.

I believe someone (either Hondata or Vit) had said the stock exhaust on the SI was not yet a limitation and any aftermarket exhaust would only offer weight savings and a change in tone.
