Guys, just wanted to ask if using 5W-20 vs the 0W-20 recommended cause any issues? I live in texas so I dont think I really need the 0W. Reason I ask is I can buy the 5W-20 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum for $25 a 5Q jug vs $50 for the same Ultra Platinum at 0W-20.

You have a Civic sport as in the 2.0 NA or a hatch with the turbo?

If the 2.0, 5w should be fine even with the VTEC. If you have a turbo, where the oil flow is used for turbo cooling, I would stick with the 0w so you know you are getting the flow rate the engineers intended.

Remember that viscosities can be good for certain things but bad for others so it is a balance. I know that there is a good argument that the difference between 0w and 5w is down to CAFE standards but I am not the guy that designed the turbo or the VTEC so I don't know for sure if switching is fine.

should be good. just don't drop in 80 weight lube and say "its all da same stuff"
 It's not all the same, but 5W and 0W are really the same as far as turbo or VTEC operation in anything but very cold climate. No one operates the turbo with cold oil, and once the oil has the temperature of anyone's anus (about 40 °C or 104 °F), the difference in viscosity is no more than 10%, or in other words, nothing. Of course the viscosity at operating temperature is the same.

The 30 weight oils have the operating temperature viscosity higher by only about 20%, which is also quite trivial for oil flow even with very precise engineering. (all based on Mobil 1 EP data).

According to Mobil1 EP specs, 5W20 has about 20% more zinc/phosphate (antiwear additives of the ZDDP type) than 0W20.

I'm talking about the"Ultra Platinum" not the regular platinum, that one is always in the 20's

I've been using 5W30 for the last 3 1/2 years in mine, no problems
Yeah I'm gonna go for it. I didn't think the 0 or 5W really mattered here in Texas. Hardly ever does it get below freezing.

This hand wringing about engine oil is absurd.

Just put in what's recommended and be happy.

Whatever you choose is not going to offer any additional benefits.

Don't be a victim of the oil marketers. They are snake charmers.
