Android auto audio over bluetooth or USB?

When my phone is plugged in and using android auto, is music (pandora, google play etc.) streaming over bluetooth or is it via the wired connection? I assume bluetooth.

I can hear a major loss in quality whenever my music streams but using a headphone jack (for those few phones that still have them) is a PIA. Kinda wish the Si came with a Cd player.

it's over the wired connection, if you disable bluetooth on your phone AA will still play audio. If you unplug the USB cable, playback will stop.
