Hi Everyone!

Just picked up my type R and drive it home(in a snow storm)

BTW those OE tires are not... winter friendly, but I knew that lol

So I was driving the car home and down shifting from 3rd to 2nd it wouldn't go into 2nd gear unless the car was under about 10mph.

Does this car have some sort of 2nd gear lock out? Just seemed odd to me but maybe thats normal?

I see the normal 2nd gear grind, glad mine doesn't have that yet :p.

Any help would be great!

Mike

Had mine a month and a half. Little over 1000 miles. Never had that issue nor the second gear grind.

through more searches I don't see anyone with this issue..

You should be able to shift from 2nd to 3rd right? lol.

I know on a track day at road America you won't ever see 2nd gear downshifting.

Ill make a video later today see see what everyone thinks.

That is a bad synchro and collar. Did you buy from Honda dealer? If so obviously it’s under warranty. Honestly if you end up getting a new transmission then it’s like you lucked out and got a new car.

Also, is this a new 19?

It could have been very very cold and the transmission hadn’t warmed up yet. At the least you’d get grinding. In my previous posts about the transmission I believe the tolerance is so tight that material expansion could be a cause. This is akin to the BMW M3 rod bearing issue where tolerances are an issue (not material expansion). But you get my drift. Thus this car really needs to be warmed up, and until then you need to baby it.

Now I do agree that normal use might not allow for warm up, and under those situations you could be causing damage to the point where actual physical wear now becomes an issue and warmup will no longer apply.

Almost like it should be in the user manual.

yeah I got it at a Honda dealer! Working on my video now!

The car has been warmed up, I tried it in all three driving modes.

I get it, a new trans is nice but I can honestly I don't want that... well I should say I don't want me new car torn apart! lol

I didn't have my first instance of the 2nd gear grind until about 2-3k in. Though most of mine occur when going 3rd gear to 2nd. I did have some instances of the 4th gear lockout (and reverse). It's not really a lockout as it would not stay in gear and pop out. Though switching to a longer shift knob (Spoon Sports duracon or Honda accessory knob) helped this quite a bit.

If they tear it apart, can you grab a calibrated caliper and take measurements? Also write down any serial numbers?

Most likely head office is coming down to see it since this blew past QC.

Can you go from 4th to 2nd without issue? This is definitely NOT normal. I wish you the best of luck in getting it quickly taken care of.
