I suspect Honda wasn't using the OEM Continental ContactSport 6 tires.

Per Honda, "The car was using street legal, track-focused tires."

Could be something like the Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.
Honda UK confirmed it was equipping with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s during the record setting lap.

Not bad considering he's shifting with an antiquated 6MT, paddles could shave more time off. Car looked impressively stable over the kerbs and weight transfers.

Car looks super stable and even induced a little oversteer. The driver also looked extremely relaxed.

I wonder how close to factory it is.

From the HondaNews.com article:

"The pre-production development Civic Type R that achieved the lap time was technically representative of production specification. A full floating roll cage was installed for safety reasons, but did not provide any additional rigidity to the body frame. The extra weight of the cage was compensated for by the removal of the Display Audio system and rear seats. The car was using street legal, track-focused tires."

probably get the best tires you can get in a few years when they refresh the GTI and beat the record?

So much of these records are tires...

why it's kind of silly to compare to gt-r times 6 years ago.
not sure what you mean by silly, gtr is still a modern age sports car and the king of JDM sports car at the time which isn't really that long ago.

Too many enthusiasts would rage if they took out the MT. Did you see the response from the cvt rumor?

If someone would make this car their daily driver. I wonder how long it would take before someone stole your TypeR seeing it sit in the same spot every day while you're at work or at home. Just saying professional car thieves going to be hunting these things down.
