So I put my winter wheels and tires on last Sunday as the temperature around here was dipping into the 30’s and I wanted to ceramic coat the oem wheels. I guess it was good timing as the weather channel app predicted 5”-8” of snow today.
As I reported for duty at 0600hrs there was no precipitation yet, soon after the first snowflakes of the season fell. By the time my shift ended, there was approximately 6” of snow on the ground and the CBP CTR was snow covered. It was freezing out, about 29°F and the wind was howling. As it was warming, I carefully cleaned the snow off of it then I jumped into the car and set off on a 35 mile commute home. This would be the first time driving the CTR in the snow and the first time driving a non-4wd vehicle since 2003. Yikes!
I decided to take the backroads home although the plow trucks haven’t been through yet as I knew from working that the major arteries were stop and go traffic with many minor fender benders calls all day. The Yokohama iceGUARD tires were fantastic! Pulling out of my parking space, they grabbed right away and provided confidence. The drive home consisted of speeds between 25mph-35mph with snow continuing to fall, often times pretty heavy. The CTR handled the unplowed curvy backroads just fine. I just short shifted and was smooth on the throttle. I mainly stayed in 3rd/4th gear and averaged 23.5 mpg. My only complaints during the drive home were the other oncoming drivers who insisted on riding in the middle of the roadway.
I have been thinking of picking up an older pilot or CRV to use as my winter car but now since I know the CTR performs awesome with snow tires, I’m leaning toward picking up an S2K! Give me leads if you know of any good S2Ks for sale in and around central Pennsylvania.
