The other day the collision mitigation kicked in on my car when a car in front of me was turning off the road. It reminded me of another thread I saw here (that I can't find now) That thread included a video from a dashcam. I had the same reaction he did...I said "wtf!?!?" LOL I was going about 50mph at the time.

Thankfully nobody was behind me or they may have crashed into the back of me. There was no reason for such sudden braking.

While getting off the highway the other day, the "BRAKE" indication went off as I was changing lanes into the deceleration lane and I thought it would have been REALLY bad if the automatic braking kicked in at that point. It's one of those situation where it's both a deceleration and acceleration lane so it's kind of hectic in afternoon rush hour.

Cars that are in adjoining lanes seem to trigger it some times.

I worry about it happening again, so I changed the setting so it won't go off until cars are closer, but now it never goes off and I wonder how useful it will be now.

Anybody else have experience and/or suggestions with this?

I put mine on the longer range, and sometimes when approaching a car the BRAKE will flash, but I have yet to have it actually EVER try to engage in mitigation mode and apply the brakes. Makes me wonder if it is really working. LoL But I am not in a hurry to put it to a real-world test.

LOL

That was exactly the same scenario I was in with the car in front of me making a right hand turn and I went straight.

Did you change your settings at all? Has it happened to you again?

Thanks for chiming in.

I had it on the longest setting, Ive adjusted my style of driving when I recognize a situation like that about to happen, so in a sense, sensing worked, it made me alter my driving to a slightly safer style!

I read up on it and it seems the system goes through 3 stages:
1) warning light and beep
2) #1 + light braking
3) #2 + hard braking

In my scenario (and the one in the video), it jumped straight to #3 with no real warning or need.

Hmmmm. I could understand if you were following too closely, but from the video, it looked like you were a good distance back. I'm not sure you needed to adjust your driving style. In your case and my case, the car we were following was already off the road so it braked for no real reason.

yep, It didn't like that I was accelerating too fast towards an object not moving so it took emergency action. The warning and beep usually happens when both on the freeway and I approach another moving object faster than he is moving.

Pretty much correct. I'd add:

1.5) Warning light & beep & shakes steering wheel
1.51) Driver's butthole puckers in anticipation of 2)

But the system is bound to throw a false positive or two in there, by nature.

False positives of beeping lights and shaking steering wheels is fine...hard braking, not so much :).

I may try setting it to longer distance. Now that I think about the logic, I can see how this might give you early warning before getting into the hard braking situation.

LOL at 1.51 :).
