for me, that sound became more noticeable when I changed my intake to PRL.
I believe its because the stock tube between the air filter and the engine is corrugated plastic and that reduces the noise.
I switched from OEM to Hawk 5.0 pads and got less noise, less dust without any noticeable performance change. but the hardest driving I do is autocross.

I think you need to ask yourself why you bought a Type R in the first place. If those reasons have changed and an electric car fits your current requirements for a car, then do it. But a model 3 (unless its the Performance) isn't really in the same category.
