My guess is that the Type R will have similar vents but they'll probably be at least partially functional. Honda loves their inactive aero, and those vents might do the trick.
I'm hoping the same, but the question is, can they even be made to be functional at that location for a front engine performance car?

Good question... i know on the spy shots we've seen of the type R it looks like they added functional vents to the far outside corners of the front bumper, but the large fake vents are still covered up, which means they're probably still not functional, at least not for cooling purposes.

Honda of Europe designed the hatch... American honda designed the coupe/sedan... so you can blame Euro honda for those vents most likely, as well as the slightly off back end shape that many don't seem to like. But since Europe is going to be buying the majority of the hatches (its the only variant they get) i guess it was more important they design the car to suit european tastes and not american tastes. That said, enjoy the giant fake vents on the Si, because spy shots look like it has the same exact front bumper/fake vents as the hatch on the Si coupe.

How do you know the front fender vents are functional? The 2015+ WRX/STI has them and they're just there for looks. The flared fender arches are probably there to accommodate the wider tires.

The current UK FK2R has the vents too, but I'm not sure if those are functional either.

Interestingly enough there is a discussion on the CTR owners forum about the front vents. They were noticing some boost pressure drops during hot weather and they started to look at trying to opening up some venting options to move more air: http://civictype-r.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=177&t=290684&start=40#p3858829

Maybe Honda has sense opened up the vents on the fenders to help solve this problem?

Do we know when the hatch launches in Europe? I ask because I fear that once it launches globally, we won't be getting them by the boatload weekly anymore.
It's supposed to launch around February 2017 in Europe but we will have more infos about the European version around the Paris auto show (early october)

I don't know 100% but judging from the spy shots taken, the fake vents are ALL covered by the car wrap, but the far outside fender vents are not covered, which leads me to believe that they are in fact needed and functional on the Type R, if they weren't functional they'd most likely be covered like the rest of the vents. Honda loves doing inactive aero on their performance models, so it would make sense since the current type R has functional vents that the new car will as well, just maybe not the large ones up front that house the fog lights.

Wow! That's actually a pretty solid comparison. Compared to that specific generation of honda hatchback, it makes the new one seem right on point.

I was thinking- the rear fake vents could house functions rear fog lights for the EDM. So there will be some desirable parts from Europe and probably Eastern Asia as well.

Vents in the rear bumpers are used to improve aerodynamics in performance cars, mostly to prevent body lift. Air turbulence builds up underneath the rear of a car at high speeds. The rear fenders and bumper help trap it. Vents can allow the air to flow though instead. The Z06 has rear vents for this reason.

I'd like to see the hatchback sport model's wheels on the sedan. Any photoshop artist want to take a crack at it? Pretty please?

Has Honda confirmed the tire size for the Civic Sport Touring?

Even if they're the same tire width, the CTR will use a much more aggressive rubber compound.

Since the Civic hatch looks pretty large, they might have chosen the 235 width tire to compliment the overall size of the vehicle.
No, they haven't, but if you zoom in close enough to the actual press photos on the Honda website, you can see it very clearly.

I know there was talk of the sport trim having a leather steering wheel, any ideas on if they might get leather "trimmed" surfaces? (e.g. armrests on door panels and console?) Those are my big annoyances with the current civics that aren't leather interior. I can handle cloth seats, but the fabric they use for those areas you touch consistently is just very uncomfortable to me.

I know what you mean. If they're keeping the civic hatchback trim levels like the accord, then hopefully. I know the new "sport special edition" now has leather everything, but the old 14-15 and 16 sports had half leather and half cloth seats, leather armrest, shift knob, and wheel. Hopefully the civic follows the same recipe.
