Ive also experienced this "Device not connected" issue significantly more on iOS 10, but it was also present on iOS 9 as well. Ive noticed that Ive usually seen this happen while the display shows the home screen (because the other half is collecting/playing Pokemon Go on my phone). Ive noticed only recently that when the audio screen is displayed (showing track title, etc) the unit didn't "disconnect". Ill be testing that theory more today on the drive to and from work. In my case, when my phone "disconnects", it requires me to restart the phone. Rebooting the head unit, selecting different sources, engaging the LaneWatch camera briefly, turning off bluetooth (wifi is always off), unplugging in the USB connector AND unplugging the lightning connector ALL don't reestablish the CarPlay connection. I also lose track forward/reverse control (as it does not recognizes the phone). Switching to iPod source has the same result.
Similar symptoms here...
  • I am sure it happens other places but I am using the CarPlay UI when it happens most of the time.
  • If I am playing music, the music continues to play but I have no control over the music using either the steering wheel or the headunit controls
  • Most of the time I don't have to do anything other than unplug my iPhone and plug it back in. I have not had to restart my iPhone (yet)
Perhaps it was my imagination, but prior to iOS 10 it would happen once, I would do whatever I needed to do to resolve it, and then my iPhone would stay connected indefinitely - not all the time, but most of the time. Now, with the beta of iOS 10, it happens once, I fix it, and then it seems to happen pretty quickly again to the point where I say the hell with it and switch to XM radio ;-)

it is not your imagination before ios 10 it happened very rarely for me. sometimes it works when i plug it in other times a complete reboot is the only fix.

Nope, still disconnects, still requires a phone restart. Also had to reboot the head unit because the volume control didn't show up in the dash/speedo, although volume control itself still functioned.

Good...I guess. I am still going to experiment with trying an Apple branded lightning cable as that did have some impact when I did that in my 2006 Honda Pilot with the Pioneer 4000NEX

I was a Day 1 adopter of CarPlay when it was released. I can tell you that when CarPlay first came out it was unusable. But every minor and major iOS update made it a little bit better to the point that it worked very well prior to me selling my car. I'd occasionally get kicked out of the CarPlay UI but it was few and far between and certainly not as much as I did when CarPlay first came out. I feel like since upgrading to the iOS 10 beta (and it is beta for a reason) that I am treading into unusable waters again.

This issue many of us are experiencing feels like a combination Apple and Honda problem - not sure who (if anyone) is more to blame. Since iOS runs CarPlay I feel like most fixes we ultimately come from Apple. And, it is easier for Apple to turn the crank on an update than I imagine it is for Honda. So while we may see several updates on the iOS side, we likely will see only 1 or 2 updates on the Honda side. And one would hope that Honda is looking into these issues as well - including the one that would allow those models so equipped to show the NAV information from CarPlay in the instrument panel (assuming that is a Honda fix and not an Apple one.) But, with that said...

My wife has a 2014 Honda Pilot and we were promised for 2 years that Honda was working on a fix some some radio issues that ultimately never happened - and actually got better with recently released iOS updates. But in the back of my mind I can't help but be fearful that Honda may leave us high and dry and move on. At this point I am concerned, but not super concerned, that things are not going to get better in the short term. It will likely be a rocky road between now and the time that iOS 10 ships. But there is no denying there is an underlining problem with iOS 9 / iOS 10 and staying "connected" for sure.

I hope you iOS 10 beta testers (bless your souls) are reporting these issues to Apple and Honda.

interesting developments on the car ride home from work. started a facetime audio call that lasted 15 minutes in between streaming music sessions (apple music) no disconnect message. i would suggest for all of you to check your carplay enabled devices and see if just having the default apps help in this matter.

In other words, delete things like Audible, iHeartRadio, etc and see if things work better?

I leave for home in like 10 minutes...I could easily conduct this experiment on my way home.

My theory And I could be dead wrong, is that those apps are still not ready (a 100%) for car play under iOS 10, which is why they should not be installed. Of course I could be wrong and I will find that out tomorrow

Developer Beta 6 was released yesterday and it seems to have resolved the disconnection issue that presented itself in Betas 4/5

Did you actually remove the apps from your iPhone or did you delete them, like I did, from the CarPlay interface at SETTINGS > GENERAL > CARPLAY > HONDA?

Removing them the way I did didn't have any affect - it would still "crash" to "No Devices Connected" within two minutes both from work > home yesterday and from home > work this morning.

Although I am encouraged that another member mentioned that the Developer Preview 6 makes things better. I believe the Public Beta is still v5 but I could be wrong. I have access to the DP builds and might try it myself although it is a slightly bigger pain in the a** to use the DP builds over the PB ones for me.

i uninstalled the apps completely from my phone. When it comes to Developer Beta Builds and Public Beta builds, the way they work is as follows: Apple will always produce a developer build (at least 1) without the corresponding public build following the "closed beta" approach. that way if something awful happens, the impact to the install base is less and also becuase the ones that get it are app developers. once they open the door and let the public betas out, they are based on the previously released developer beta. the differentiation is made with the profile that you installed on the phone. for the sake of disclosure i am using the developer beta

one thing that i have noticed is that for some unknown reason after the phone gets connected to the car via usb, a message pops up saying "device not connected", i thought that for some reason it switched to USB but that is not the case, since as soon as i unplug the phone the music stops.
Same here... touring model

Sometimes it connects then just a few minutes later carplay disconnects
