I've experimented driving in every mode just to get a sense of how the mpgs are affected. And besides the mpgs changing, I've also noticed the throttle response feeling different too. So, to the point of ECON mode... When I'm driving in this mode, I've noticed the throttle response to be perfect. It feels noticeably less "twitchy" than in Drive or Sport mode but it's not laggy either. Like I said, it feels just right. And this is very subjective, I know, but the engine seems to sound better too. There's still the growl but it just sounds less coarse. I don't know all that goes on in ECON mode but I like it for it's driving characteristics. What do you all think?

It definitely affects your throttle response. It gives a large buffer between pedal activity and actual throttle body opening. I believe (not fact) it lowers boost also. Definitely helps with city MPG.

I drove with ECON mode on for about a week and it off for a week. When I feel like having a bit more pep, I turn it off. Sounds much better and feels much more responsive. Econ mode makes it feel like a dinky Prius.

Yes! I don't think Econ limits the boost at all, but it numbs the throttle and transmission response so that it is easier to maintain momentum. I could theoretically get the same throttle from regular D mode, but it is much easier on my shin muscles being able to change my foot position without much change in throttle position. It also allows the Cruise to lose or gain a touch of speed on a grade for better economy. I drop it down to S for when I need better response and push it back up to D when I am done. I never turn off ECO, and see no real reason to.

I prefer Eco mode too for city driving, its smoother and not as jumpy

Eco mode (in my opinion) is strictly for those that like to city commute and not use much gas to get up and go. The throttle response is reduced, and feels like the car is a dumbed down Honda Fit. It's nice in the city I guess, but I just usually control my foot a bit better in the city or highway for better MPGs, and I usually return better numbers than if Eco mode is on.

I have two questions for you:

1. Can you change into S mode from D mode while moving? Like while zipping down freeway? I know if you go from D to N or P your car will crash and engine will explode.

2. What happens if you put car in S mode and turn on ECO mode? Seems contradictory to me. Will this explode the engine?

If gas was $5.00 a gallon I might use it but I'd rather walk than use econ mode...as far as down shifting to (S) or (Sequential) mode as Honda calls it I do it all the time as well as (L) makes car fun to drive:drive:, Benefits of the CVT IMHO

I've switched into Sport/sequential/S-mode/Second Gear from Drive mode while the car is moving and I think it's fine. I usually switch it while my foot is off the gas pedal.

You've posed an interesting question putting the car in S-mode while running in ECON mode. Let's both try it and see what happens. I don't think our engines will explode.

Besides slamming the car in Park or Reverse gear - I don't think our engines will explode - but the owner's manual says it can damage the transmission. SO DON'T DO IT! :D:D:D

Okay well I'm not brave enough to try the S Mode with ECO thing. Seems like a bad idea

YES! I 100% percent agree. The throttle response is very smooth with eco on, something that I couldn't say for my 2013 civic, which made econ mode feel like you were being punished for wanting better gas mileage. I haven't noticed much of a difference with econ mode on though as far as gas mileage.

Observations:
  1. Econ mode is designed to get better gas mileage and will, especially around town where your pedal inputs are muted and thus " gas saving".
  2. You will notice that the air conditioning fan speed slows in econ mode. Also, the compressor seems to be working less and taking longer to cool the interior. This I believe is baked into the car to increase economy.
  3. I believe there is an electronic inclinometer within the electronics because while going uphill at a certain pitch the CVT will raise the RPMs by 1000. Conversely while going downhill it appears to place the gear in a lower ratio giving a modest amount of engine braking while going downhill. Again, thoughtful engineering.
  4. My best results using the turbo are to start out in low and stay there, shifting to S when passing 6200 rpm. Really screams!
  5. Honda does a lot of little things that are engineered into the car to make it delightful to drive.

I agree. in lots of smaller cars these different drive settings don't make much difference. WOW NOT EXT or TOURING. Its like a different car in each driving mode and most cars econ mode is wimpy. The Civic seems perfect, just enough control the jumpy starts and a smoother running engine. I went a gas tank on econ and hit 32.4 MPG easily without even trying especially when you get a little high time. LOVE SPORT MODE with the engine breaking it feels like your driving a standard when you let off the gas. Another feature I love is the BREAK HOLD awesome for long lights and stays in break hold mode every time you hold the break for 2 seconds until you turn it off or shut off the car.
