2 examples why...

I was merging unto the freeway about three days ago in 4th gear going about 50 MPH, there was a Semi already on the freeway in the farthest right slowest lane. Not wanting to be stuck behind him, I stepped on it still in 4th gear, I swear the sensation of speed as I merged in front of the semi was breath taking. I was shoved back in my seat and by the time I looked down I was going about 95 MPH without even realizing it. Very underrated.

2nd reason..

I was cruising on the freeway and a GTI pulled up next to me, looked like a 2015-2017 model year GTI. I knew what was about to happen so I gunned it about the same time he did, we were pretty much neck and neck from 60-85MPH, this is a car that makes 220 hp and 258 lb ft of torque how was that possible?

I know dynos have shown that all the Civic engines are underrated by Honda, for what reason? I dont know. But it is true, the Si engine is a little monster.
I know, this happens to me all the time. I thought I was crazy, I thought I can't be the only one this happens too. I actually had to go look up the 0 - 60 times for the car. Even then, I thought, that can't be right. Butt Dyno...

I'll give you some lap times on theVirginia International
Raceway ( 4.1 mi ) . Car and Driver Oct/ 2018.
2017 SI stock 3.14.6
2013 SI stock 3.23.0
CTR 3.03.9
Accord 2.0T 3.18.4
WRX 3.15.4
STI 3.13.8
2015 GTI 3.14.6
Focus ST 3.20.9
BRZ Perf. Pac. 3.19.3
Mini Cooper JCW 3.15.0

We have no reason to be ashamed of the performance
of the SI. Same stock, it is already extraordinary for a
1.5 l engine.
But if you modify it a little bit, you will pass far ahead
of all, except the CTR, but you won't be far behind.
That's why I love my SI.

Owning a car for 2.5 years or making other racing stories doesn't recuse you from making it up or exaggerating the outcomes :rolleyes1:. Spend any decent amount of time in the car/drag racing scene and this becomes quite evident early on. I've had countless Si owners thing they could take me in my MS3, S2000, or SS, much to their chagrin. I've also beaten Cobalt SS's and Ferraris at the at the ATL Motor Speedway and Dragway in my 8th gen Si's, but this didn't delude me into thinking I actually had the faster car.

it is already extraordinary for a
1.5 l engine
This is true it is a extraordinary little engine. Not to knock on anyone but I’ve read many threads on this forum on how the SI is slow or the turbo is small so on and so on and they say I should of kept my GTI WRX
Mustang GT etc all of these cars have larger engines and yes the should have more horsepower. But this is a 1.5 liter turbocharged engine from 174 hp to 205 hp ( and yes these hp ratings are under rated probably for insurance reason IMO) years ago a small block V8 had the same horsepower ratings 4.9 liter ( ford 302) and 5.0 liter ( Chevy 305) and these engines perform the same as this little 1.5 liter turbo Four cylinder. I believe the SI shouldn’t be knock on car enthusiast should be amazed getting the performance out of a little engine
Yes some of these cars will out perform the SI but also at a price ( a few grand more) and it’ll be hard for some of these cars to shake off this little 1.5 turbo especially tuned
I don’t own a Si my civic is a EX -T 174 hp untuned and in my opinion it performs quite well
Also to note the CTR has a 2.0 liter turbocharged engine which is also a little engine :)

This is not unbelievable at all. Not saying that a stock Si is faster than a GTI, but OP's story is a lot more believable than that guy a couple months ago saying he kept up with an IS350 lol.

You mean my IS350? LOL. He was just trying to get a rise out of me!

A GTI isn't so much more powerful and fast than an Si that they could have "not been flooring it" and been equal. It's not a 400 HP V8 that can modulate the throttle to match you, but at any moment peg the gas and walk away without effort.

A GTI is so close to the Si that a fraction of a second jump, a wrong starting gear, or a driver mod makes all the difference.

Some of you talk like the GTI takes the Si out back with the shotgun.

Get real. Seriously.

I couldn't have said it any better myself.

That was you in the story? It was a hoax the whole time? :oops:o_O
No, it wasn't exactly a story about me, the OP of that thread tagged me just to bust my chops. If you read thru the thread he mentions later on that he actually didn't know if his friend (who was driving the said IS350) was racing or not. He was just trying to get a response out of me due to the fact that sold my Si and bought the IS. He's a cool guy, one of the knowledgeable guys on this forum. So, I guess you can say it was indirectly about me, if that makes sense!

Many reasons but here are the main ones.

1. I was always nervous that my clutch was going to start slipping even though I knew in the back of my mind that it wouldn't if driven right.

2. I am cheap, and sometimes I like to alternate between 87 octane and 93 octane, with a tune you are forced to use 93 octane.

3. I had a 3 hour road trip once and during my drive something happened where the tach started to bounce all over the place, even bouncing over red line. It was a very strange situation because I was cruising at about 85 MPH when the tach went haywire. There was no change in speed or even a change in engine sound, just an electronic glitch. I pulled over, shut the engine off for half a minute and turned it back on and everything went back to normal and I continued my trip. Not saying this was the tune's fault, but I convinced myself that somehow they were related.

4. I have always been satisfied with the Si's stock power for what I use it for, a fun daily driver. The tune really was just an experiment, and while the power difference was noticeable, honestly I havent missed it since going back to stock.
Regarding #3, that was your lambda sensor readout. It is scary to see it when you don't know why it's happening, but basically if you are tuned, your cruise control is off, and you press (even inadvertently) the set cruise/reduce cruise speed button, then your tach begins to swing around wildly because it's showing unburned oxygen in your exhaust. Pressing that button again reverts back to a regular tach readout. In stock form you don't have access to this, so accidental button presses are meaningless.

Come to think of it, this is precisely what happened. So I guess they were related after all lol.

Does this cause any kind of damage to the car?
