hmm. really? you don't mind the 3's solid rear axle? That was the only thing that held me back from the Mazda 3.
Didn't bother me. The exterior and interior design were worth the small sacrifice in technical suspension quality. You would only be able to tell at over 8/10ths which is uncommon for a daily, especially where I live.

Don't get me wrong I really like how the Si handles and I like the turbocharged torque it has, I just subjectively liked the 3 more, it just made me feel better.

I did trade down from an M235i however, so I am coming from a bit of a different place.

Mazda literally gave up trying to find me a brand new, manual 3. The local dealer had two Si's on the lot.

If the had found me a 3 I would have that instead, it was my first preference.
So you liked the Mazda3 hatchback better? How much was it?

The interior is definitely smaller than the Civic, it is several inches shorter and it was darker on the inside due to the smaller glasshouse. It was also definitely slower.

The interior felt on par to my old M235i, I'm sure some of it was only skin deep but the gauges, infotainment, presentation, seats etc all looked and felt much higher quality than most everything in the same class (except a Golf). I like the exterior design of them as it is much cleaner than the Civic and the interior felt like a sideways step rather than a downgrade which is what the Civic feels like to me. Again though I'm coming from a different viewpoint to most.

The big reason I think they failed to deliver is I negotiated a pretty great deal on it. They gave me excellent trade in valuation, the monthly payments were higher at $350/mo (including 8.75% tax) for a 36mo lease but I also negotiated that they cover all taxes, registration etc so I was getting $7000 back for the trade and the only money I was paying from day one was $350.

I am disappointed in Mazda for not offering manual transmissions on any of their sedans, it would seem like a no-brainer for a brand that has such a rich history of making enthusiast cars. A 3-sedan in manual would have been very tempting before I got the Si.

I’ve been a Honda guy since my first car, an 87 CRX. Also, since the early 90’s my family has worked at Honda dealerships in sales, finance, and more. They’ve went from no experience with car sales to some of them being the top salesmen in the country or working at corporate now, and I’m super proud of them. I spent many many days as a younger kid in a Honda dealership. As for why an Si specifically, I’ve always been a fan of coupes, and the Si is a great platform when it comes to dependability and modding.

Here’s a picture of me in that CRX I mentioned from around 1996.

3 of my previous cars were Acuras, so I'm pretty loyal to the Honda/Acura brand. If Acura kept the manual in their TLX or new ILX, then I probably would've opted for one of those.

The Si checked all the boxes for me. 6mt, LSD, moonroof, Android Auto, heated sport seats, fuel sipper, low curb weight and 4 door sedan option. V dubs have a nice interior, but get pricey when you add options. Wasn't a fan of the Hyundai or Kias, well, because, they are Hyundais and Kias lol. I do admit that the Genesis G70 Sport manuals are gorgeous, but then you're moving into the $35-40k range... Might as well get a Type R at that point!

The Si seemed like the most logical upgrade for me coming from a 6mt Acura TL. The only thing I miss from that car is the sceaming NA V6.

When I bought the SI, the A3, WRX and GTi were the main opponents. I was about to pull the trigger on an A3 but my honda dealer madr me an offer ($$$) I could not refuse.

Eventhough i may change the SI this year, i must admin that in term of value (performance, equipment, fuel economy, price) it’s hard to beat!

I took a loooooong time to make a final decision (literally years), agonizing over several different cars: the Si, GLI, GTI, Elantra, Veloster N, among others. In the end, though, it boiled down to this: I'm a sucker for a good deal. And apparently I'm not alone in that:

I truly believe there's no better compact performance bargain than the 2020 Si. Previous models were great deals too, and then the 2020 added LEDs and sensing. All told - power, performance features (LSD, adaptive dampers), safety features, tech, efficiency, reliability - there's simply nothing else out there that balances all of these components as well as the Si. For example, I really liked the GLI, and it measures up to (or exceeds) the Si in power and features - but reliability and efficiency aren't its strong suits.

This was my logic as well.
I'm with these guys. Wanted to get back into a fun manual after a few years in my Jetta, and considered the GLI and the Kia Forte GT. I scratched the GLI over reliability concerns, and the Forte GT manual trim was lacking some features I really like (e.g. heated seats). When Honda added adaptive cruise to the 2020 model I was sold on the Si. I'd also say that the support of this community and the opportunity to tune in the future also were major selling points to the Si.

My Si is the first Honda I've ever owned. When I bought it, i was debating between the Civic (obviously) and the new GTI. It was a bit of a rushed decision (my daily was wiped out by a drunk driver) so I needed wheels - fast. The main reason the GTI (and actually the Type R) lost out was because they're hatchbacks. Had to have a manual and a sedan. Would've gone Audi, but they're discontinuing MTs as of last year according to the dealer.

Simple: bang for the buck. Got my 19 Si for about $2k under sticker. Everything else was way more, and other than the Mustang convertible, nowhere near as much fun.

I felt that the SI provided the best mix of performance and economy for the price. It's wild to me that I have a sporty sedan with a turbo that can still get me up to 40 mpg highway depending on how I drive.

In this price range, the SI is hard to beat. Plus the turbo engine gives us alot of room for mods and more power, and this car has a manual and an LSD. And if you get a 2020, then you get all the cool cruise control and Honda sensing stuff. I was looking for a safe and fun commuter car around 25k, and the SI fit the bill perfectly.

Also I feel like the gen x civics will be sought after in the future, especially the MT SIs.
