I'm sure that many of you have already been under your GenX Civics by now but yesterday was my first look underneath. I was pretty happy to find a use for my 1930s drag link socket. Honda decided to use those giant ass skid plate fasteners which conveniently are the exact size.
When I removed the skid plate, I was greeted with an odd surprise. Something fell and hit me on the head but whatever it was, it surely was not metal and didn't hurt. I thought for a second that I snapped some flimsy fastener. What I found on the ground was a high side A/C cap that looks unused.
Curious if I was missing the cap up top, I took a look and found both the identical H marked high side cap where it should be and of course the L marked low side cap. Hmmmmmm. Ooopsy at the factory? Anyone else get a gumball prize when they did their first oil change? I can't imagine there is a hidden second high side valve anywhere on this car. Am I right? I did a quick search around the engine bay but only found the two that I expect to see up top.
Aside from this little surprise, everything else was smooth. I like that Honda tilts the oil filter when draining but it does introduce a way to easily cross thread a filter if you're not careful. All in all, no major engineering design issues for DIY oil changes.
