Toyota uses dual injection(port and direct) to help prevent carbon build up. Anyone know what Honda does to prevent this?
I don't think Honda does anything special to account for this. Dealer mechanics reported I had three injectors fail at less than 90k miles. I think that's about average for direct injection. It's worth noting I didn't have much warning. I got an Emissions Systems Problem warning about a week before I felt intermittent loss of power. A few days later, the light started blinking and couldn't get up to highway speed. Fuel efficiency didn't drop at all and even improved slightly.

Recommended service was replace all fuel injectors (they come as a set of four), replace coils, replace spark plugs (due to carbon build up), replace fuel pipe set (one time use part).

Wow! I appreciate all the effort he went through for that. The problem I have is that I see the same generic trucks delivering gas to different stations. This includes the Shell that I regularly get my gas from. Are we really getting what we think we are? Alot of these stations are independently owned and operated, so whats to keep the owner from saving a few bucks and ordering whatever gas he wants? Guess it just gives me piece of mind to add something to my tank here and there. I might be wasting a couple bucks, but I'm sure not hurting anything.
I owned a supermarket for 26 years that sold non branded gas. All the gas comes from the same refineries and the additives are added or not added into the delivery trucks depending what station they are going to. Generic stations have no additives.

Maybe you should worry more about carbon buildup on the intake valve...

For fuel injector you are fine as long as putting TopTier gas in it. Remember that gas itself is a very good SOLVENT.

I am more concerned about the intake valve since this is a direct injection engine. There’s literally no way to let gas clean the carbon deposit on intake valves.

My understanding is all gas sold in America must, by law, contain the necessary additives to keep your engine clean. If you research fuel additives you learn that they are mostly snake oil and a waste of money.

Honda send to have found a way, by misting the valves on the piston upstroke. We have a couple threads on how they do it.

It's no magic pill. But combined with a good PCV and regular filter maintenance, it seems to significantly reduce deposit accumulation over time.

I've been looking online for a description of this technology, but haven't found it. Do you have a reference to share?

Damn, that really sucks... Darn GDI with turbos. I have an oil catch can installed which will help with blowby and carbon buildup on the intake valves like someone mentioned earlier; other than using top tier gas, what the heck can be done for the fuel injectors? And they seem like a complicated job to replace oh jeez.

Injectors seems to be a common failure point on these cars. Best you can do is use the best gas around and maybe throw some cleaner in and burn through that tank of gas, before doing an oil change. Had to replace mine at 57k

Holy shit. Do you have a write up? That would be amazing if you can give us some information on how to do that job.
1. Remove all the connections on the manifold, as well as hoses, for the hoses pick the easiest side to Disconnect from.

2. Disconnect the 4 bolts on the throttle body. Disconnect the 3 bolts on top of the manifold, 2 on the bottom. Pull the manifold off.

3.Remove the gard on the end of the fuel rail, 2 bolts. Unclip the injector wires.

4. Disconnect fuel line to the rail, remove the rail bolts x2 for each injector. Pull the rail off, you do not need to Disconnect the rail pressure sensor on the end. You can then bring the rail up ontop of the motor to service the injectors.

5. Throw it all back together.
