Hello all,

I have a 2017 Civic EX-L. This past weekend my wife drove the car and got a warning that the battery in her key was low. We replaced her battery and now when we go to lock the car, it locks but the lights don't flash and we don't get a beep. I've checked to ensure all the doors, hood and trunk are closed and checked the preferences in the system. I no longer get a beep with my key either. I didn't change the battery in mine but did take the key apart to see the battery type.

I use the beep often so I know it's locked as I walk away. Any thoughts as to how I can fix it?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure you need to take the fob's to the car, and redo your lock settings on the screen.

Not sure what you mean. I was in the car with my fob when I looked at the settings.

Based on recent experience -- NOT from reading any Honda manual:-

What appear to be happening (or really NOT happening) is the Intruder Security system is not arming.
I had this happen once, and I changed the FOB the battery -- because the "Horn/light/walk-away" was not working, and then it still did not work.
(BTW Battery measured OK after 2 years, but since I had it open, and had a new battery, I replaced it)

The clue is that the key fob battery is in fact ok, as it can lock & unlock doors, but the Alarm system will not arm, so your walk away locking will not work, and you wont get the Horn beep, and the headlight flash.

It turned out (in my case at least) that the Hood was not 100% closed and fully latched, so although it "looked" closed, the Hood Switch was in fact telling the system that the hood was open, and therefor the system would not arm.
(I had check the oil the day before )

So what i suggest is that you re-check all doors, hood and trunk, open them, and then re-close them, and see if that fixes things. (especially the HOOD )
There is an Instrument panel warning if Doors (or trunk ?) are not 100% closed, but no indication for the Hood being not 100% closed !!! (apart from the horn/light/walk away locking not working)

Note: The Horn beep, and the headlight flash do not indicate you have locked the doors -- they indicate that the car has been locked with the security system active.

I've got a 2020 Si and it might be different on yours. My settings give me options for what the fob does. I found out that I needed to program the fob in my car. If you have those options in settings. Even if the settings are correct, I would toggle the settings to try to make the head unit re-program the fob to do what you want.

2018 Si ... I always believed that the option your set on the head unit, were set in the head unit, and not written to the Fob itself.
Why would the OP's Fob stop working at the same time as his wife's ?

Whatever the answer, I hope the OP gets it sorted without having to get the Stealer involved.

In addition to all of the above...

Maybe try rebooting the head unit/system with both fobs nearby. You've upset the Honda Force with your low battery. Refresh it and let everything shake hands again in unison.

Thank you for all the great info. I open/closed the hood and played a bit with the head unit but nothing seemed to work. Today when I got to work I hit the fob to lock and it beeped/lights flashed .... not sure what changed but it simply started working again.

Thanks!

When I press the fob's lock button once the lights flash & you can hear the doors lock, but no beep.

If I press the button a second time the lights flash again & there is a beep.

Since I don't hear a beep with one button press does that mean the security system is not armed, even though the lights flashed?

Still could be an intermittent door/trunk/hood switch.

The Doors and Trunk should be obvious, because they will show as being open on the Instrument Gauge.
The Hood does not show ( I believe)

There is a red Flashing light on the Instrument Panel, that should come on and start flashing, if you lock the car, and the Security system becomes active,
It will not start flashing if you lock the door, and the security system cannot become active, because a door/trunk/hood is open, or not fully closed (or some other reason why it cannot arm).

Your Key-fob can Lock & Unlock the doors, but you say no Horn or Headlight flash.

Check to see that in this case, the RED light is not coming on and flashing. This will indicate that the security system cannot arm.

Try again, after opening and firmly closing all doors/hood. and trunk.
Do one at a time, and after each one, re-check the Red Light, to see which one may be being intermittent.

My GUESS (sight unseen) would be an Intermittent Driver side door switch, which is the switch you open & close every time you enter or leave the car.

----------------
I just tried all this on my working Civic. Any unsecured door/hood or trunk, will cause exactly your symptoms.
Check that red "Intruder system Active" light

EDIT:
Checking Forums I found someone having the same problem as the OP

Guess what was causing his problem --- Intermittent Driver side door switch

My Owner's Manual states:
■ When the security system alarm activates
The horn sounds intermittently, and some exterior lights flash.

The only way that happens is when I press the fob lock button twice. Usually I just press the lock button on the door armrest when exiting the car because it's right there. That means my security system is rarely activated. Wonderful.

My other car & previous car activated the security system when you locked the car. I wonder why Honda doesn't do this every time the car is locked no matter how it gets locked.

Can confirm this is definitely something to do with replacing the key fob battery... Replaced my first key battery about 1.5 years ago and it stopped beeping for locking and the multi beep for walking away with the key while the ignition is on. Switched to my second key with no problem. Recently had to replace the battery for my second key now no beeping at all. Doors lock/unlock, lights flash, and alarm light goes on, just no beeps. Tried turning the setting on and off in the head unit with no result. At this point I'm thinking the key has to be reprogramed by the dealer. If anyone has figured out a solution it would be much appreciated
