Well I got a pretty much brand new Civic 2018 1.5t sport that makes a very off sound on idle now and then. Sounds like a submarine sonar sort of. Yes I know that is a weird description . When you give it some gas you can hear the noise become steady or just change interval. It does not however follow the engine revs. Any ideas what it is? Just take it back to the dealer?

Have a sound file that I recorded on the phone but it's aac and it's not allowed. Perhaps I can convert it somehow.

No need to convert it. Put the aac file in a .zip file and you can upload that here. No one can help without hearing the noise.

Ok here is the file. Listen from about 17 seconds and forward. The noise is not affected by if the car is cold or hot. It is as I said affected by revs but not following them. Turning the fan or AC on or off does not affect it at all. More like the torque is doing something to it. Thanks for listening and trying to help :)

I hear the "sonar" sound but don't know what it is. Hopefully someone else may know.

I have concluded it is the AC. I am afraid it might be a bearing. Bringing it back next week to the dealer. Will report on progress.

If it is the AC Compressor, then turning on/off A/C should make a difference.

Not up to date with Modern Civics, but traditionally, when the A/C is off, the A/C Clutch is totally dis-engauged, and the compressor does not turn, so neither do it's bearings.

In any case, Dealer's tech "should" be able to figure it out ( for a few $1000 ) :hmm:

Yeah, it does go silent when the AC is turned off. That's how I found out where the noise came from. The car is under warranty so it won't cost me anything. Don't like my new car being taken apart though but not much I can do. To me it sound like either a bearing or something rubbing against metal.

Not happy with the car at all. Done about 5000km and it has been to the dealer more times than my Mitsubishi was in 200000km.

If they say there is nothing wrong and the sound is normal, it could still cost you something for the diagnosis....

Sure. I have had enough cars to know it should not sound like that. You can affect it with the throttle also. I have been there enough times to know that even if they didn't find anything they would not charge me.

So the car is diagnosed. According to Honda this is a certain pipe that causes this noise in combination with the new gas that was introduced 2 years ago due to environmental laws. So they switched out the pipe. So if you have this "sonar"-like sound it is likely the same issue.
